Destination: Sacramento & Gold Country
Made famous during the California Gold Rush, you can still pan for gold in the region’s many streams and rivers, though water sports such as kayaking and rafting are modern treasures for today's visitor. You can still explore many smaller mining villages too, like in Nevada City, which has preserved many 19th-century buildings and landmarks.
With the days of the gold rush passed, the region has shifted towards "liquid gold" and is now a major wine destination. The region's climate is similar to that of Spain or Italy, and there are more than 100 wineries between Sacramento and Lodi valleys and around Amador and Calaveras. Wine bars are popping up all over Sacramento and other cities within Gold Country.
Many of the best golf courses in Gold Country make use of foothills terrain, like Saddle Creek Resort, DarkHorse Golf Club and The Ridge Golf Course, while Haggin Oaks is a historic play in the capital city.

As you move northeast along Interstate 80 past Sacramento, the transition from farmland to foothills seems to happen in an instant. When you walk out to the putting green by the pro shop at Cordova Golf Course, you'll probably notice that the dress code is far from country club standards. And there is nothing wrong with that. This is not a course where you can expect the strict traditions of the game to be religiously observed. This is a place designed to provide recreation. In that scheme, it's perfect for those new to the game.
... full article »Whitney Oaks Golf Club in Rocklin: Johnny Miller makes you pay attention
I had been warned: Whitney Oaks Golf Club was the hardest course east of Sacramento. But when I heard who the course architect, my reply was simple: What did you expect from a Johnny Miller design? Having played several northern California courses designed by Miller, the common features are amazing green complexes and tough greenside bunkering. To be expected from one of the best iron players in the history of golf.
... full article »Wildhawk Golf Club in Sacramento: Digging and shaping 18 holes of pleasure
Wildhawk Golf Club in southeast Sacramento is a standout example of what cities and counties can do to create public recreation. But there were challenges to overcome. As you drive to the course, the surrounding reveals the challenges, for this was flat and open land. It took a lot of work with a Caterpillar bulldozer and some imagination. Course designer Michael Poellot dug here, raised mounds over there and created doglegs for a good variety of holes, which is what keeps up the interest and what creates the challenge.
... full article »Pastoral and peaceful mark the experience at Teal Bend Golf Club in Sacramento
The setting of Teal Bend Golf Club -- near the Sacramento River, the largest in northern California -- does not bring the waterway into play. But its influence is very much a part of this Brad Bell design. Bell laid out a course that's easy to walk during which the golfer experiences interesting contrasts between short and long holes. But Bell did very little to change the thing about Teal Bend that most golfers love -- the quiet.

For Kyle Phillips, the acreage that came to be known as Morgan Creek Golf Club represented a chance to pursue his passion, creating a heathland course in the Sacramento Valley. Astute golfers know that "heathland" means not just firm ground but also large trees and natural grasses. The last two features contrast with the links courses whose dunes and hollows still must play through seaside winds.
... full article »Bing Maloney Golf Course in Sacramento does a lot by not trying to do too much
The best thing about Bing Maloney Golf Course is it doesn't try to do too much. The greater Sacramento area has plenty of new public choices for avid golfers. Bing isn't meant to compete against those. It's a 70-year-old play that works its way through large oak and pine trees. The 18-hole course is the central element to a 27-hole facility that includes a nine-hole Executive course, a large driving range and a first-rate pro shop.

Architects at times do some of their best work when there isn't a lot of land. Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course, about 15 minutes south of downtown Sacramento, falls into that category. A core course that has nine holes and adjacent to another, it doesn't play like a back-and-forth, hit-and-walk. Bartley Cavanaugh generally makes the most out of a plot of land wedged between the Sacramento River and Interstate 5.
