Destination: San Francisco
North Beach and Chinatown are especially ideal neighborhoods for diverse restaurants, nightlife and shopping options. Along the waterfront, Fisherman's Wharf boasts a lively street scene full of fisheries and street entertainers. Out on the bay's waters, boat tours of infamous Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge are favorite tourist sights.
The city is as rich in culture and diversity as you'll find in America, but golf history is illustrious as well.
Though overshadowed by the oceanside golf courses on the Monterey Peninsula to the south, San Francisco boasts its own prestigious additions to the golf world dating back to the early 1900s. All within view of each other just off the ocean are regular U.S. Open host Olympic Club, San Francisco Golf Club and revived municipal course and President's Cup host Harding Park Golf Course.
Head outside the city and your public and resort options improve, and so does the weather usually. Summer months can be chilly in the bay area, while the fall is historically the warmest season, with highs that generally stay in the 70s. Bring a windbreaker though, and golf is possible year round in the bay area, especially if you're willing to head outside of San Francisco's microclimate away from the fog and towards sunnier spots.

It doesn't take much time on Skywest Golf Course in Hayward to realize that this layout has great potential. This is old-time "feel" golf. But for those who prefer precise distances, especially on approaches, this is a good course where a relatively high-quality range finder can make a big difference. It's also a course where the long hitters can pull driver on every par 4 and par 5 and bomb away. In terms of scoring, accuracy off the tee falls way behind distance. Grip it and rip it is the way to go here.

It doesn't take long to realize why Tilden Park Golf Course has a deep, devoted pool of regulars. The Course at Wente Vineyards, a sprawling multi-dimensional layout 45 miles southeast of San Francisco, plays more than 7,100 yards from the back tees and has an eye-popping slope rating of 145. That's why first-timers -- even single-digit handicappers -- might want to take on this Greg Norman design from the blue tees, Ted Johnson writes.

Peacock Gap Golf Club in San Rafael, a bucolic suburb about 10 miles north of San Francisco, is not a course that will wear you out. It is only 6,200 yards and has relatively little elevation changes, but it will require some forethought off the tee and precise approach shots. Long hitters might find Peacock less than a challenge, but it keeps its defense up throughout thanks to the difficulties surrounding and on the greens.

For a municipal golf course that handles 60,000 rounds a year, Callippe Preserve stands out for its maintenance. The fairways are firm and fast, the rough noticeable but not punishing. The greens maintain their speed throughout the day without getting too lumpy. The course is easy to walk, though the elevation changes on the back nine can suck the energy out of your legs. On a clear day the view from the 12th tee can extend all the way to the back channel of the San Francisco Bay.
