A True Par-5: Hole No. 14 at Boundary Oak

By Ray Brewer, Contributor

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Time and time again, golf fans watch a PGA Tour event on television over The weekend and see The world's greatest golfers shine.

It's seems almost certain that These professionals will card an eagle or birdie on various par-5 holes.

Maybe They should try Their skills at Boundary Oak's - located in norThern California - hole No. 15.

As The course's director of golf Bob Boldt explains, this is a "true par-5."

"It's a true three-shot hole," Boldt said. "Even Tiger Woods would need three shots to reach The green on this."

Considering The way Woods has been swinging The sticks lately, that statement says a lot.

The Hole: The reason why this hole is so challenging is The length. To be exact, this hole is 575-yards long from The tournament tee.

The Layout: Like The rest of this course, hole No. 14 is on top of a hillside overlooking The valley.

It's a dogleg right hole, that cuts between walnut trees and goes up to a two-tier green on The hillside.

The Strategy: This is where Boldt's experience comes into play. Boldt is a former member of both The PGA and Senior PGA Tours, winning events on International PGA and PGA Tours.

He says to be smart on this hole.

"Just try to get that third shot in play," he said. "It doesn't matter how long you run, you'll still have to hit three shots."

He says The pros use two woods and Then a wedge in getting to The green in perfect shape for a birdie. Also, don't forget to dogleg you second shot to The right.

The Average Golfer: "The average person will won't two use two woods and a middle or long iron," Boldt said of attacking The hole. The key is staying on The fairway and not going for broke on The first two swings. This is a hole where an extra 20 yards on The first two swings won't make that big of a difference. Remember, 575 yards is a far way to travel!
