Unbeknownst to many Los Angeles golfers, one of the best public golf courses in Southern California lies just minutes from downtown: the Dwight D. Eisenhower Course at Pacific Palms Conference Resort's Industry Hills Golf Club in City of Industry. This gem opened in 1979, and was recently re-opened after an extensive, multi-million dollar renovation. [...] more »

A $12 million renovation has completely changed the look of Palm Desert Country Club. It's gone from a golf course that barely had grass in the fairways to one that's all lush green. This is still very much a reasonable Palm Springs-area course, with greens fees topping off at $75 in high season.

What strikes the newcomer about the 7,088-yard Barona Creek Golf Club is that it looks almost too perfect. If you were a film director and wanted to shoot a Western-golf movie, this golf course would be the perfect set. It's almost as if every rock, every stick and every scrub sage was placed meticulously in exactly the right spot. Just imagine the pristine conditions of the actual playing surfaces. [...] more »

The Palm Springs-area Desert Willow Golf Club offers two municipal courses with anything but municipal conditions. Its Mountain View course is often thought of as the easier track.

Robinson Ranch encompasses two 18-hole layouts, the 6,508-yard Mountain course and the 6,903-yard Valley. Both Ted Robinson Jr. designs share some features - a mix of tight and wide-open tee shots, big, dramatically undulating greens - but the difference suggested by their names is genuine.

Three nine-hole golf courses - Creek, Oaks and Stonehouse - are the centerpiece of the Temecula Creek Inn golf resort in Southern California. Scenery and playability are the draws here, with Stonehouse the jewel in the resort's crown.

Desert Princess Country Club throws 27 holes of very different golf at you. On one of the nines, it's a wide-open links-style design with mountain views and few houses. On others, you can almost find yourself playing in someone's backyard. [...] more »

Cimarron Golf Resort brings a very different look to Palm Springs golf. For one thing, there are no palms. This links-style track is free of trees, but full of sand - white, thick sand that is going to make or break your round. [...] more »

Old Greenwood Golf Course in the Lake Tahoe/Reno area is downright forgiving in parts. Jack Nicklaus made six trips to Truckee, Calif. to see that his vision was put in right, and the holes he crafted around water are the stars of the show. [...] more »

Parts of the course at Whitehawk Ranch Golf Club, particularly the first six holes, have wide-open views that stretch all the way to the mountains. Other parts are completely surrounded by towering trees, creating the effect that golfers are shooting in a forest theater. [...] more »

Coyote Moon in Truckee, California might just be the best golf course you've never heard of. This design by obscure ex-PGA Tour player Brad Bell gets overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, but Coyote Moon can hold its own with any of the Reno-Tahoe corridor's big boys. [...] more »

In designing the PGA West TPC Stadium Course, Pete Dye was told to make the hardest golf course in the world; some people think he succeeded too well. Still, for the average golfer, this 151-slope-rated monster is one of those must-have experiences on a Palm Springs, California trip. [...] more »

The perfect fairway lies and great putting surfaces combine with a forgiving Player design to give you a real chance at posting a career round. This is a golf course that can make you feel good about your game. [...] more »

Pete Dye Resort Course at the Westin Mission Hills has all the Dye signatures - from the railroad ties to the swales. But Dye holds back on some of the usual bite, keeping the winter rusty resort visitor in mind. The slope rating from the gold tees is a modest 126.

The Classic Course Indian Wells Country Club was deemed outdated by the PGA Tour because it measures a reasonable 6,478 yards. There's plenty of challenge and wonder still in it for California golfers, however. This is traditional Palm Springs golf and some of the best of it. [...] more »

The Dunes Course is one of three Pete Dye designs in the Palm Springs PGA West/La Quinta Resort course cluster. It's the least well known and the most easily forgotten. That doesn't mean it's devoid of interesting holes. The Dunes Course starts to gain momentum on hole No. 8 and there's run where five of the six holes have water features that come into play. Indian Canyons Golf Resort is a Palm Springs course that gives power to the people - the regular golfing people. It gives you a series of driveable par 4s rather than trying to pummel with monster holes. It also is in great shape, especially considering its reasonable greens fees ($95 high season) in a resort golf wonderland. [...] more »

Escena Golf Club is the first new golf course built within the city limits of Palm Springs, Calif. in more than a decade. It's definitely new school though. This isn't your father's Palm Springs course. [...] more »
