the course is not being watered and will close in september
This was a great course. It has not been watered for some time and is "browned out" . Was a great lay out and we still had fun to play it. You watched for the "poof" as the ball hit the dead fairway but it played better than you would think. Play it soon, the staff says it closes in September
A Race Track.
This great Pete Dye/Fred Couples course is being kept barely alive, due to lack of money, play, and water. Fairways are all brown and fast due to lack of water, but the ball usually sits up and is very playable. Bunkers are hard pan, easy to chip from but impossible to get close. The greens are excellent, and the pace of play is the best: On a Saturday, I teed off at 10:55 and finished at 1:45. So even though conditions were flawed, playing 18 holes in less than 3 hours was a blast. To all players who think that 4-hour rounds are fast: Please Play Elsewhere.
Unless you enjoy dead grass... pick another course
It was my understanding from the cart girl that Lost Canyons was letting the Shadow Course die, as it has or will be sold for real estate development. The tee boxes were green, but in terrible condition, the greens were kept fine, but the fairway was dormant and dead. A perfect drive down the middle served you no good, as your second shot was off hard-pan dirt. There was no mention of these conditions during the reservation nor the check in process. It was a discounted rate, but would have rather paid 50 bucks more to hit off grass...
Absolutely no grass on the fairway
The course is 99% abandoned. It's like playing in the desert.
Fairways DEAD. No watering. Closing Shadow course to build new homes.
What a dissappointment! Have played Lost Canyons before. It was always a beautiful but difficult course. We teed off only to find the fairways after the first hole dead. Also no GPS. Few markers on the course. Told GPS was being repaired. Tee boxes in poor condition with weeds.
Greens dry but tolerable. No one warned us.
After we finished I asked if the fairways were dormant or why they weren't watered? He told me they were eventually closing the Shadow course and going to build new homes.
Would have been nice to know ahead of booking that there was no GPS and the fairways were dead. Ground under repair one thing, but under destruction?
A very challenging course that is having a rough summer
This was my first time here and I actually look forward to playing this course again when the fairways come back to life. I played the shadow course and ALL of the fairways where completely dead. This made it very difficult to even figure out where to hit as everything just blends together in one big mass of dead grass. The greens were in pretty good shape, although you could only see them from a couple of the tee boxes due to the extreme ups, downs, lefts and rights of this course. It was 110* the day I played and I know it can be challenging to keep things green, this however was not even trying!
Waste of money
This is by far the worst golf course I've ever played.
I'd rather play the VA par 3 golf course in North Hills than this place. The only time you see green grass is when you are teeing off and when you're putting, other than that, everything is yellow dried up grass. Put it this way, if you land on the fairway, you're still not safe. It's like hitting off of furry concrete. It felt like I was playing in someone's backyard in Iowa or something. Even the sand traps are in poor condition, they should be called mud traps or gravel traps. The only nice part of this course were the greens, although I felt they were way to challenging considering the condition of the rest of the course.
If this course was revived with green grass and softer sand, it would get 5 stars, the mountain views are very nice and it's very challenging. Until then, I will never step foot on this course... Even it's free.
Could be great.......
Paid $55 for Shadow Course. When I arrived, was informed that they don't water any fairways. Only the greens and tee boxes were alive. Paid another $20 to play the "watered" course. It was better but not great. Greens were in good shape. Definitely not worth the $75. The guy I played with only paid $55. Something weird going on there. The GPS is horrible. Only shows yardage, no picture of holes. Lots of blind shots. Very disappointed.
Great target golf, just needs some water on fairways
This turned out to be a fun round and I had the course to myself. What a Great HOT DEAL this well.
I had not been to this course in years and a lot has changed since. Maybe the city cut off their water but their once lush green practice range and fairways are now brown sadly. The green are healthily and the grass around them.
If you have a swing in your bag, you will have fun hitting targets however if your a hacker stay away. Hackers will slow the pace of play looking and losing balls not having any fun.
Yes the fairways are brown but still very playable they just need to be added into your calculation of how you attack the hole.
I will be out there again and I hope nobody else is as well again.
for 27 bucks, its a deal!
course has some great holes, but needs water on the fairways and sand in the bunkers

Let course go b/c of no play; still silly design elements
Many in the area are used to Lost Canyons ("Lost Balls") silly/tough design elements. Well, it's obviously caught up to the course as they stopped watering the fairways some time ago. The "natural" approach is not as offensive as one might envision, still plenty of cushion in fairway and the greens are still decently maintained. Unfortunately, the bunkers are not.
The super discount rate on golfnow was $45 w/ cart. Honestly, that's the most I'd pay to play this course.
My advice for any course management reading: Charge $30 flat-rate for unlimited play until you recover some interest; the volume should make up for price drop. if possible, carve out some wider fairways, use dirt to serve as bumpers on fairway edges. the fairway roll-off into hazard is one of the most disappointing elements of both courses
The Shadow course is not being maintained.
I played with a relative from out of town and honestly was quite embarassed that I picked this course. While the price was decent, I should've done my homework as the Shadow course is in terrible shape, fairways browned, sand traps hard, greens a little better but not much. Still had fun but I won't play there again. Rumor has it that they are letting this course go to and keeping Sky (which is in pristine shape). Oh well, I still enjoyed it.
Horrible worst course
Worst golf course
The management should pay attention to maintein the course
Especially fairway glass
Fairways are completely dead
I've played both of these courses in the past and they were fantastic. I wanted to take my dad to a nice course for fathers day. To save time, we'll put it this way. The course was completely dead. No grass at all, basically just dirt everywhere except the greens (which were actually in nice shape). What a complete waste of money, an embarrassment and disappointment. I will be calling golfnow for a refund. You notify if the greens are punched, but not if they haven't watered in a year? After asking, it sounds like they are selling off the land that the shadow course is on and putting in homes, so they are just letting it die. What a waste.
The 'dozer is next!
The worst. Should have played the other Lost Canyons course (Sky). Shadow course is going to be demo'd soon, to be replaced by a housing tract. Wish I'd read the other reviews before I chose this diabolical excuse for a golf course.
Do not play
This is the worst golf course I have ever played on. There is NO grass anywhere in the course. It looks like they haven't watered the course in years. EVERY shot, you are hitting off dirt. Even the bunkers was dirt and not really sand. Worst golf course ever. I will NEVER play here again
Not the time to golf here...
Lost Canyons Shadow course has been left to fend for itself... The fairways are not being watered and it is in very bad condition right now. It's a shame when you know you hit the fairway by the cloud of dust that kicks up! I suggest staying away until we get substantial rain... Which may be NEVER!
The Shadow Course is in terrible shape
Ive played the Shadow Corse before it was always pristine, it is now in a state of disrepair. No grass on any fairway, sand traps just dirt, tee boxes a mess. The greens are OK, seems like no water on the course at all apart from the greens. Pretty disapointing
Greens were nice and receptive with a high ball flight.
Played the Shadow Course in the morning first group out. Fog was hovering for first couple of holes made for slow play. After the fog had abated course played very good. Could use some TLC.o
