The shadow course fairways are not watered at all.
This golf course is extremely dry. The fairways are on the Shadow course are so dry and the dirt is so hard that you can't get any lift on the ball. Terrible, terrible course.
course could be great, if watered. hot weather has dried it out, & it obviously is not being watered.
gps not available, so they need better yardage markers, the few that were there were hard to find. terrain makes guessing yardages especially difficult.
it's poorly maintained golf course.
Poor maintained fairways, no grass it's like playing in a
construction zones.
This course (Shadow) is dying !
They stopped watering the Shadow Course at Lost Canyons. The Tee boxes and Greens are watered and green, but he fairways were like dirt. The Sky course is said to be in good condition. I believe it won't be long until they shut down the shadow side.
This course is a mess and will be closing soon
For the money it is a good value, but the greens and tee boxes are the only thing green on the course, but totally weed infested.
Their are so many gopher holes I thought I was being pranked in a remake of Caddyshack, and Bill Murray was going to pop out of nowhere to surprise me! The fairways are like a dirt sandlot where the balls are hard to find because they blend into the dirt. Also the ball will travel an extra 50-100 yards as it bounces across the hard dirt. So it is not very realistic to real world golf...but for $15 bucks it is a good course to practice on.
this place will not exsist at the end of the year!
They have sold the land for development into houses! So the only thing they are watering is the tee boxes and greens. otherwise the course is totally dead!
Dirt Cheap rate for all dirt fairways
I played the Shadow Course, which I have always liked and got a Hot Deal at $12, which makes it hard to pass up. I was not aware until I arrived that Lost Canyons is intentionally letting the Shadow course die, so the fairways are just dead, yellow grass and a lot of dirt. The greens are in decent shape and are actually green in color. For $12 it was totally worth it, but any more that that and I would have skipped it. Check out the photo I uploaded, that's the 5th or 6th hole, all of the yellow is fairway that used to be green.
The course has a challenging layout, but the fairways have been completely neglected.
The fairways have not been watered and were literally all brown. The greens were in relatively good condition.
Strange condition of fairways. Greens in very good condition but tough to read.
Strange condition of fairways. It's like the grass is very light brown (dead? or dormant?).
Greens in very good condition but tough to read.
Layout of fairways is a challenge but fun to play. This course is a super bargain.
Dried and dead
The only green areas of this course are the chewed up tee boxes and the greens. The fairways were basically dirt, and the bunkers were dirt. The worst conditions I've ever played.
awsome layout
this course is a spectacular layout lots of elevation chages challenging greens but they are very slow business wise so they don't water the course we were suppose to play the shadow course so he put us on the sky course for an upcharge
which felt a little like a bait and switch but the sky course still needed maintenance as well but there was at least green grass
Great layout, fairways completely dead
Challenging, interesting layout. The tee boxes and greens are in decent shape. Fairways are completely dead. You are hitting off of dirt or straw. For $20-30, where else are you going to play a Pete Dye course. Don't pay more than that.
All the fairway grass is dead
They are not watering the fairways on the shadow course at all, basically hitting off of dirt. greens are in good shape and the tee boxes ok.
My cart ran out of juice on 17 so I had to walk in.
Finding a yardage was challenging.
Wait until the water the fairways before playing
Although dried out, It's very playable with great greens (and surrounding areas)
Me and my buddy played the Shadow Thurs, Sept 5th and again (To make sure we weren't crazy) on the 12th... This may sound crazy, but I Gotta tell ya', the Shadow is actually very playable right now. It ain't pretty (Completely dried out) but the greens and surrounding areas are GREAT! (I don't even know how they did that).
About 5 months ago, I couldn't tell you what the heck was going on out there! Fairways were patchy! Rough was worse! Greens were rocks (Bunkers too)! NOW? It's weird... It's like it came full circle but forgot the color green... 90% of your lies are good! Even in the rough (Cause there isn't any). It's like playing an old links course with really good short game conditions. IT"S $25!!! (With a cart!).
This design is very difficult for an average player (But that's Pete Dye), so play up a box and have a good time! GREAT LAYOUT! Bottom line is, a course like this (Especially in these conditions) will make you better! We play EVERYWHERE! Including all the Munis... And lets face it, very few tracks are in any kind of condition to point and giggle these days (Especially the Munis). I'll take an exciting layout with greens that roll true, over... well, pretty much everything else that isn't just that!
For two rounds now, on the shadow, there's been no problem with lies. Again, it aint all that pretty to look at, but there's something kind of cool about being on the tee box and seeing this perfectly green target off in the distance. I carry a 0.4 index (Playing to about a 4 right now though... Work related), And I got it that low playing all the tough courses, Shadow being one of them.
We use to play it a lot, so I was VERY disappointed when it started to go down hill. When we played the Shadow two weeks ago, we really thought we were there to say goodbye to a once spectacular track... Confusion set in around the 5th hole when we realized we had no complaints! We were both playing well and had the place to ourselves (Good times). So to make sure we weren't crazy, we went back the next week... We are going again tomorrow!
Not at all trying to say YOU'LL feel the same way. But for less $ than to walk a Muni? Heck, chance it! just bring a couple of extra balls (Although, if you look for yours, you'll find twice as many as you lose). Btw...I want to thank ALL who think they're good enough to play Pro V1's and ProV1x's... I haven't bought a ball in about seven years... and that's pretty much all I play (I know... Karma will make me pay for that comment).
Hit'em straight playaz! And if not, go to a course that forces you to... And just go at it!
Course not maintained
If you like a low maintained course this is it. When I arrived at the course I found out that they no longer water the fairways at all. Very dry and not to pretty. I did not play this course because of the conditions.
Amazing views!!
This course is the most scenic course I have ever played! Easily the best course in the world for $39.....if you are in the area it is a MUST play golf course!
Shadow Course unwatered led to upsell to Sky Course
The $20 Shadow course was totally browned out except for the greens...so we were offered a $15 upgrade to the Sky course which was well maintained and completely empty at 7:30am on a very hot Simi Valley morning. $35 for cart and 18 was still a good value but I felt slightly misled.
Once-great course is no longer worthy of paying for...
For admitted economic reasons, the club has decided to let the Shadow course become fully neglected and deteriorate to the point of it no longer being worthy of fees more than a municipal executive course. With no irrigation, the fairways have become hard-packed, dust-laden and utterly unsightly. If management truly does intend to abandon the Shadow course in favor of building new homes on the land, they should do so immediately and advise any potential customers to spend their money elsewhere. This was one of my favorite courses a few years ago and well worth the drive from south LA but this latest round was my last on this course until it resembles a golf course.
Awful! Awful! Awful!
When the starter told me nonchalantly "We haven't been watering the fairways on the Shadow Course" I assumed it would mean that the fairways were dry and the grass brown/dead (perhaps they were going to be reseeding the fairway in the next few months?). OMG! It was dirt! There was no fairway grass to water if they wanted to! It was like playing golf on the freak'in moon. I felt deceived! The friend that I was playing and I took a humorous attitude to the whole thing. Balls "exploded" like cannonballs landing in the fairway. One uphill hole was a scream! We both hit good tee shots only to have the balls roll back down the fairway about 50 yards. Nothing to "hold" them in place. I'm glad I didn't own an expensive set of clubs since the fairways AND "sand" traps had rocks in them. The greens were in good shape, however, that was a small consolation!
fairway is poor
fairway without a piece of grass and tee box is poor too.
It's look like nobody take care of it.
