The Hilton-affiliated Homewood Suites and Embassy Suites in La Quinta, Calif., are fairly new properties, so they're in great shape, and they offer amenities beyond your basic hotel. While they're not priced like the Motel 6, they are priced well below some of the pricier resorts in the area.

Pulling into the driveway of the Westin Mission Hills Resort & Spa in Palm Springs, Calif., you get the idea it's going to be just another nice hotel. The driveway isn't particularly long or ostentatious by modern resort standards. The waterfalls and shooting fountains are almost reserved and dignified (what's resort about that?). Of course you couldn't know at that moment that whoever designed Westin Mission Hills likes to play as much as Tom Hanks character in "Big."

Jack Brogan, his wife Irene and their friends Margaret and Bill Thompson are all be getting into a Cadillac, heading for prestigious Indian Wells County Club for a day of golf, free Best Western breakfast in their bellies. That's right, Best Western. In a Palm Springs California area that in many ways gave birth to the concept of the high-end resort, the Brogans and Thompsons have found golf happiness in a more low-key venue.
