The Black Horse was built after the unexpected popularity of its sister course the Bayonet that was built 10 years prior in 1954. Situated on the site of the former Fort Ord, both share a rich military history. Both also offer unrivaled vistas of Monterey Bay, but the more open nature of Black Horse allows for more panoramic views. The layout tumbles across valleys and hillsides, ensuring that there is hardly a flat lie anywhere on the greens. It is arguably less difficult than the Bayonnet, but both are formidable challenges. The par-3 15th hole is one of the Black Horse's signatures. A beautiful view of the bay greets golfers as they prepare for this treacherous hole, which not only plays into prevailing wind but also features a series of bunkers to the right of the green and collection areas to both the left and rear.

Bayonet and Blackhorse are terrific golf courses! The new bent grass greens run firm and true--very similar to premier Northern California courses like The Olympic Club. Practice facilities are among the best you will find anywhere. At current rates these courses also represent very good value. All things considered (including the cozy bar restaurant with spectacular outside patio) this is a 4.5 star experience!
