It's not easy to outdo and overshadow Pete Dye. But many golf observers feel that Gary Player's done just that with this design at Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage.
Player fit his course into the natural surroundings, taking advantage of the desert. When possible he worked the greens and tees into land that was already there. Player also uses waterscapes, waterfalls and the peaks of the San Jacinto Mountains to dramatic effect. The fairways are wide. Blind shots and doglegs are virtually nonexistent.
In other words, Player almost went Dye opposite. And it works. This course isn't tricky in its challenges. Intricate rock formations are featured, they are more for effect than to bring water into play. Player's challenge comes in course length and the brisk winds that can send shots every which way.
"You really get the feeling of being in the country on this course," former TravelGolf.com writer David Holland said. "If you are first off the tee you will be chasing off the countless jackrabbits who are playing in the early-morning dew."
This country does have houses and the hotel in view, typical of many resort courses.
