About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2017.
The Champions Club at the Retreat was carefully carved from the canyons that surround the Cleveland National Forest. The golf course closely follows the natural contours and depressions of the landscape, providing a variety of elevation changes with which to contend. The undulating greens usually have multiple tiers and the hills and valleys guarantee a few blind shots and forced carries. Your shots won't need length necessarily, but they will need to be straight. Each hole offers not only a unique design thanks to the diverse terrain but also different, equally stunning views. To make this formidable golf course more playable for a wider range of skill levels, a 2011 renovation took out 16 punishing fairway and greenside bunkers but there are still plenty there to provide a challenge.

Circus Ride
This track is a circus of design. It's tough but only if you aren't hitting the proper clubs the proper direction. See what I did there? The track is tough, but scenic, designed into the side of a hill for the most part as the anchor of what WAS a million dollar gated community. The gates are still here, the values not so much. Call Nicklaus and he will build....something tells me Jack never set foot here thus he deem the land unfit for play. They had to open it to the public and it's far too tough for your avg hack. Case in point..on 8 they filled in two bunkers...for what appears to be no other reason than aesthetics. Oh, wow, look there's two bunkers down there....tough...
I love the place and find it a stern test. Unless you are a 15 or below, you have no business there unless you like to get beaten and mauled. Enjoy!
Challenging bt scenic course
First time playing here and wa attracted by its elevation changes and dog leg layouts. First few holes on the front 9 kind of give you the taste of what's coming up. Back 9 is much more difficult than the front. Narrow fairways plus a bit of wind, bring lots of balls with you
therapy
tuff coarse stay within yourself and you"ll do well.
great course
I enjoyed playing there it was a challenging course. Unfortunately the 7 hole was under construction . but still a great course
course in good condition
Its a tough course have to keep the ball in the fairway or its gone but fun with all the elevations
Great Golf Day
What a great Golf day when you can play one of the IE's toughest courses for a extremely discounted rate. The staff there was friendly and the course was in fairly good shape. Unfortunately, for the course there wasn't a lot of people playing but it was great for us. I will be going back to play very soon.
Champions
Anyone who has heard of this course its challenging, Not impossible but challenging. Have to know how to manage clubs, errant shots usually mean lost balls. Lots of elevated greens and tee boxes. Great course that usually offers reasonable prices. Check golf now will catch really good deals. Overall love this course layout and the challenge it presents.
Amazing
This course is tough with the elevation changes throughout, the greens are great and just a overall breathtaking view. This has quickly become my favorite place to play! The staff is wonderful and make you feel very welcomed.
Bring extra balls and hiking shoes
Always going up or down and rolling fairways make this a very tough course for an average golfer. I have an 11 handicap and it was very tough. Amazing greens and beautiful course, I am looking forward to going back, and playing better...
Falling Apart
I can except the construction on the course but Ive been playig this course consistently for three years and have never seen the greens so bad. I also had to wait 20 minutes for a cart and got the run around from the front desk and the cart guys. However, considering the price reduction i guess its fair. To bad cause its always been a great course.
This course is not worth it.
Went to play this course and the par 5 first hole was under construction. Wish I would have known that before booking the tee time. Most of the fairways were in poor condition. Staff was very nice and apologetic. Very slow 4 some that kept letting singles and double jump them but wouldn't let our 4 some play through. Only played 9 holes before leaving because I couldn't take another 3 hours to play the back 9. Disappointed with my round from what has potential to be a gorgeous golf course.
best in corona
I love the challenge beginners bring a lot of balls
Worth a visit!
This course has a good mix of easy holes and diffifcult holes but I wouldn't recommend it to a beginner. There are some long tee shots required to reaach the fairway and we played from the black tees which made it tough at times...
The views are amazing!
Challenging Course
Challenging but could be very satisfying depending on how you play that day. The weekend flash price is unbeatable. Very nice sceneries all around ; just watch out for some of those houses that are fairly close to the fairways.
Beautiful Course...but....
Got an incredible deal to play this gorgeous course. Had a 630am Tee Time, arrived at 530am to warm up. Staff didn't show up till almost 6am. Was informed in the pro shop that the range didn't open till at least 7am so zero warm up. There was an issue with the starter, seems that he was given the wrong days tee times so we were delayed in starting. The golf course itself was in excellent shape. Beautifully manicured, tight landing areas, and amusement park greens. More technical than Eagle
Glen. The golf was memorable. At the turn around, looking to purchase food and beverage, the staff was nowhere to be found. Not wanting to be disappointed again, we finished our 19th hole at another establishment. If not for the under $30 greens fee, the day might have been ruined. Saved a lot of money by NOT being able to spend more. My cheapest round of golf this season. Not my first time here, and definitely not my last either. Hopefully, it was just a triple bogie day for this club and never to be repeated.
Tricked Out!
This course was built as a private course, the owners should get their money back! I played well out here, but I'm a single digit handicap. I can't imagine a junior golfer, new golfer, female golfer or a high handicapper playing this course. The course has too many forced carries and blind shots for the average golfer. Course condition was fine, clubhouse was nice.
Challenging course fun layout
Played it yesterday in 100 degree heat. Finished in 3.5 hrs. Back nine is more challenging than front nine. Course condition is very good considering this is an IM course in summer. It world great if the management could put in new sand in the bunkers.
Tricky Architecture - Good Condition
This is target golf through the ravines and foothills. It's a great tract if you have the patience and the game for the challenge. There are many tight fairways, forced carries, and some really fun elevation changes. Risk - reward options at every turn - and failure is punitive. Yet playing conservatively will also bring additional challenges in reaching greens. Drivable par 4's and reachable par 5's, and remarkable blind shots over a mountain to a receptive fairway far below. There isn't anything quite like this course - and you'll either love it for the novelty and creativity demanded or you'll hate it because it forces you to play the course - not just whack a ball as far as you can. In fact, you won't be using a driver off the tee on holes 1 or 10. Also, you'll be doing some hiking up and down hills to get to your ball on occasion - so expect to get some exercise.
The greens are fast and have contours that make you think...and they were in super condition. Tee boxes and fairways were also in good condition. One major negative - and this seems to be epidemic in the mid-priced public courses - is the poor condition of the bunkers. Very little sand in them and they were hard packed.
I played in 3 hours midweek prime time. Price to value is spectacular as management is aggressively promoting the course. Be aware that "members" of the club get to go off before non-members even if you have a tee time. Once I had to wait 30 minutes beyond my tee time because a group of members showed up without calling ahead. But still played in 3:30 minutes.
Realistically you need to play this course 3 or 4 times to learn what clubs to hit and when, adjust to the greens, and either hit it straight or bring extra balls to offer in sacrifice. The best part though - you can play this course 3 times for the same price as playing other like quality courses once.
Fun course
First time at this course. It was a fun and challenging layout. Only negative was pace of play, nearly 5 hours on a close to empty course. Marshall's did a good job on the back nine trying to prod the slow group ahead.
This course is will test your golf sKills
One of the toughs course I’ve played in a long time. To challenge is course will either make you or break you.
I can’t wait to take it on again.
