Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2017.
The Champions Club at the Retreat was carefully carved from the canyons that surround the Cleveland National Forest. The golf course closely follows the natural contours and depressions of the landscape, providing a variety of elevation changes with which to contend. The undulating greens usually have multiple tiers and the hills and valleys guarantee a few blind shots and forced carries. Your shots won't need length necessarily, but they will need to be straight. Each hole offers not only a unique design thanks to the diverse terrain but also different, equally stunning views. To make this formidable golf course more playable for a wider range of skill levels, a 2011 renovation took out 16 punishing fairway and greenside bunkers but there are still plenty there to provide a challenge.

Great course
It was a very challenging course but taking out some bunkers has made the course a lot more fun to play.
Nice day, tough course
Played on 12/5. POP about 4 ½ hr. Conditions are ok. Like the other review said, 13th green is not putt-able. Haven't played the course in about a year but just as tough.
amazing views!
Love this course! Coming back in the future. I will bring a group next time.
Awesome elevation changes
It was a great course, though not for beginners. The fairways and greens were in great shape with the exception of one green that seemed to have a fungus.
Beautiful scenery but some tough lies due to the slopes of the fairways.
I will definitely play it again. Well worth the price.
This gold course is went south quickly!
This course had a country club feel from the start and then it went south once we started playing. This course had a 140 slope rating. I really wanted to play this course from the tips so we did. Unfortunately, some people shouldn't be playing from the tips. There is actually a sign stating that on the first hole. We followed a foursome that was looking for their golfballs out of bounds on every hole!! There was wasn't a marshall around to hurry this group up so we were stuck all the way to the 15th hole. We stood on the 16th tee watching four guys looking out of bounds for over five minutes! We packed up our stuff and called it a day. The course was very nice and challenging. Play this course with a clear schedule and extreme patience though.
Very Challenging
Yes they have taken out some traps around greens and long ago switched the nines around to at least ease you into the 5 straight very tough, tight elevated green holes now being 10-14 but this is still a very tough course. The rest of the holes are no walk in the park either from uphill to hard to read greens and the constant uneven lies this course challenges every part of your game . Score on the front , survive the tight precision placement 10-14 and you will score. Par 3 green #13 is torn up and gruesome take 2 putts on this one for sure as not clear how this green is gone. Every other green was near perfect on this day. Fairways had some brown tight areas but were mostly in nice condition.Had 6:35 tee time finished at 9:45 once we cleared a courteous 4 some we were all alone on the last 13 holes. Cannot beat $38 if you want a challenge. Played the Blues shot 82 couldn't avoid 3 doubles and those come easy with the slightest error.
Challenging course - be warned
This was a good course, but not very woman friendly. I'm a 15 year female golfer - and drive about 190 average yards. There were several holes that I wouldn't be able to clear because the ravines were too wide. The Par 3's were very doable and the tee boxes and greens were in great shape. Very tough pin placements as most were on a slant. Fun but very challenging.
Jack would be disappointed
The course is designed by Jack Nicklaus an with a Jack course there are certain conditions associated with this kind of a course? I have played many Jack courses an this is by far the worst course of all of them. I feel the superintendent an the owners of this course should be ashamed that they are charging the price they are charging for play, its not worth it. The par 3 13th on the back nine, is completely ridiculous the green is completely ruined an not even worth putting on. This course needs help an who ever is in charge is not doing the course a service.
Disney golf !!!!
What were you thinking? This is Disney golf on steroids ! Not one close to flat lie on the entire property, forget the golf course! The only positive we took away was the guy in the pro shop was really friendly and helpful, the golf was just a waste of time and I've never seen so many people just driving around a course looking for open holes to play, I guess they don't know that you start on #1 and finish on 18 !! Even the turkey sandwich we had was dry and pre made, a real disappointment, we will not be going back !!!!!!
Challenging course
I think this is a tough course for average golfers. Although the golf course scene is great but the course presents challenging task for golfers with medium to high handicap.
Give this course a try and see how you guys fare, price seems good for weekend round. We paid $44 + $2.49 (booking fee) per person on Sunday mid-noon tee time.
Beautiful course
I loved this course!! Tough and challenging all in one!! I loved the lay out and look forward to playing it again!! Nice driving range but can only use irons no metals! Chipping and putting range were both nice! Like the GPS in the cart but could have been a bigger display!!
Great Course!
The retreat is a unique golfing experience. Tons of elevation change make this a challenging and beautiful place to spend an afternoon.
Pick up the pace!
I have played this course 3 times over the past year and each time there has been a little waiting on each hole because I am a single mom who can't afford a $70 golf round earlier in the morning. So, I play twilight and usually get a special rate from golf now. Anyway, the pace of play yesterday (10/19/14) was unreal. I took my boyfriend out for his first time there and we had to not only wait on every single hole, but every single shot!! It was very frustrating. Most people like to stay consistent or their golf game goes to you know what! It was a 5 and a half hour round and we were pretty unhappy having to finish 18 in the dark with a 1:20 tee time. We didn't see the Marshall once to tell the groups in front to pick up their pace. It probably won't stop me from returning but my boyfriend sure won't recommend this to his co-workers or friends....
good
pretty short course compare to what it shows in actual yardage.
WAS a good course in 2007, but now neglicted condition
slow slow slow pace. rock hard dried up fairway with puddle around low points. mostly no flat fairway. deep deep bunker with not much sand. very slopey with many blind pin and green. green is U-turn multi tier. dont let their profile pics mislead you
Be good or be gone!
Our first time here and probably our last...for while. This course was a little above our experience level. Price was reasonable due to recent greens airification. Greens were holey and heavily sanded, made putting a challenge. The views were awesome and staff were all friendly and helpful but layout means you have to be accurate with Tee shots or bring plenty of balls. would play there again.
under maintenace
The greens were just punched so I can't say much about that, but I believe the fairway conditions could be much better. Overall, it's just a tough course. Target golf to the max, narrow and uphill fairways with a lot different types of lies. Not for high handicap golfers.
this course. has good features
I was so frustrated to my co players when I was at course stater line. And just informed they done aerification greens from starter staff yesterday. I know it was hot deal green fee for weekend but it is not even close values for course that just finished aerification. We ruined game and our weekend time at this course. I think some kind of notification needed if course has aerification within 1thru 15 days....because..if they just done aerification job on greens..it is not hot deal at all..and also we will not drive 15 miles with traffic to play golf this course..
poor.condition
I am not telling about seeds.
Fairway condition is no good.
The food.quality was horribles.
Navigation is.very poor..very cheap one...
Great course adjustment
Had not played this course for at least a year since the course was too tough. Did not really like to take that much of a beating while playing golf. Heard that they had re-did the course and thought we'll give it another try. Played on Friday the 19,and they did a great job of softening the course. Took out some penalizing bunkers and wow made a huge difference. Everyone in the group agreed that this course is now more playable and will be back. Great decision in re doing the course!!!!!
