good for all levels of golfer
greens in excellent shape and quite quick, not a gimmicky
course and will definitely return
Pleasant Surprise
Not sure when this course made the turn into a steal of a twilight deal but Kudos to the course managers. Great price for the course, pace was great, rum drinks are a good deal also.
Good golf course for the money
SLRD is one of the best golf deals in SD County! Traditional course with tree lined fairways, several dog legs and well placed hazards! Greens are pretty fast and are tricky to read! Very fair course if you can keep it in the fairway! The staff is very professional and very nice! Definitely one of my favorite places to play!
Nice course; good value
San Luis Rey Downs is a moderate course on the difficulty scale: Big time rewards for hitting straight; moderate difficulty for wandering a little off the fairways, and punishing for those who get in the trees - and there are a lot of trees. The day we played, the greens were soft and a little damp - and were still fast. Overall, the course is maintained fairly well - you can't blame the course for the fact that bermuda grass turns brown in cold weather. The staff is very friendly, and the food in the snack shop is good. Another nice things is, in multiple rounds we've played here, we've noticed that San Luis Rey usually plays fast. In our latest round, we had to wait on about half the tees, and still finished in just over four hours. To sum it up, I'd recommend San Luis Rey as a nice, enjoyable place to spend an afternoon whacking at golf balls.
Best Value
This is a great course and the Par 5's are all reachable, putting is the key here with tier green the standard!
Very Slow and So-so Condition
Played this course for the first time 12/20, and was not impressed. The conditioning is so-so, with large bare areas in the fairways (at least many were marked GUR), sporadic rough, and bumpy greens that were inconsistent in speed (some were slow, some much quicker).
But the worst was the pace of play, taking over 5 1/2 hours on a weekday. We saw a marshall once as we were getting ready to tee off on 10 and politely complained, but he didn't seem to care much and made no effort to go out and find the problem. It took us over 90 minutes just to play 8,9, and 10, and later on the back nine could see that 18,17, and 16 were completely wide open, so there was clearly a problem group out there and a little proper marshaling could have helped.
To me, there are much better choices around that offer a better course and proper pace of play. Just a mile up the road one can play the Golf Club of California for just a little more money than San Luis Rey Downs, and it is a much, much better golf experience.
Classic Golf
This is a fun course for golfers of all levels. It's fairly flat and without any very difficult carries off the tee, so is great for those that aren't long hitters. But the difficulty comes in the rough and trees, which can add a bunch of shots to your score if you aren't careful. "Hit it straight" is an important thing to always keep in mind here. A few of the fairways were so nice they could have been confused with artificial turf (not all, but a few). All in all a great value for your golf dollar, and to top it off, they even have a great little bar/restaurant that is very welcoming after a hard day on the course.
The greens on this course are immaculate and the ball rolls true
Saturday 12/8/12 was my first time ever on this course. Our foursome was extremely happy with the course layout, setup and condition. You have to use strategy when playing this course. If you are a long hitter, a driver is not ideal as ball placement is crucial. Fun course and would recommend to anyone.
Greens are excellent; fairways much improved since last played.
new white tees are great for the senior golfer - no more 200+ yard par 3's! Fairways are much improved over past years; greens are fast and roll true. With all the trees, still a good test for all abilities.
This course is always good.
Course is always in good shape. Staff is great even on a very busy day.
Needs work
Condition of this course has gone downhill badly since last played and they oversold tee times thus a five hour round. Not fun.
Great greens that really roll out and putt extremely true.
This course is fun. It has tons of trees so you better bring your straight driver with you, but if you do get in the trees there are some escape routes. Every hole is different. After a round when you go back to review it you can remember each hole for its uniqueness. The greens are fast, have just enough break to make you think and putt so true that anything struck on line is going into the hole. I loved this course.
Great course, Great staff, Great value.
I played early morning. The pace was fast, which i liked. This course has a reputation at this time of year, to be covered with leaves from the many trees. Which would make it really hard to locate your ball. But this year it appears the ground crew is on top of the problem. Very well groomed. The greens are lightning fast. I had a great time playing this course and I only killed a couple trees in the process.
Okay Course
Found a deal on this Northern San Diego Course so I jumped on it. The price was reasonable and the course was decent enough to play.
On our day of play it was very windy and there were many leaves on the course which made it difficult if you hit anywhere outside of the fairway.
In general it was a fun and challenging course and I would probably play here again if I couldn't get a good deal anywhere else.
The clubhouse was decent and the bar/restaurant had good food and beer.
There's no one but me!!!
Easy starting hole and then a short 5... Then the doglegs and par 3s show up... Love the 205 yrd par 3 and the 10th hole is reminescent of sawgrass ... It gets a little stale on the mid back nine but great finish with another short5
Excellent value and good course..Greens excellent>>>>>
Good course and improved fairways and greens...Excellent value at 22 bucks....Lot of trees but they have leaves cleaned up....Good driving range....flat course easy to walk if you want....
Front 9 a bit more challenging than the back 9
Generally an open fairway course with shot-making, very doable. Bunkers can be challenging (steep faces in some cases), but it makes for thinking your way approaching the greens. Keep it straight, and par is always possible.
Would play again
Greens need attention, bad spots make putting difficult, lots of ground under repair areas on fairways, sand traps were mud, need soft sand
great layout and good price
course well maintained and set up. only negative comment I have is when the course got busy on the back nine, single players were pushy about playing through regardless of the fact that there was no place for them to go as there were three foursomes ahead when they rudely pushed through.
