Best course for the money we played
We go to this area every year in August. This course was in about the same shape as Pala Mesa and a lot less expensive. I really like the layout as well. We played 6 different courses and this was the only one we played twice.
Good course with great weather!
Course was in good shape for this time of the year. Trees come into play but positioned in a manner to allow good shots to be rewarded with scoring opportunities. Greens were receptive and rolled at medium speed.
Needs work, but still a nice layout!
A little dry in many areas, but still enjoyable. The marshals were needed because of some very slow players ahead, so we hooked-up with the twosome behind, which helped. Overall, it appeared that the course may have had a water-budget problem. With a little more attention to the fairway conditions, the course could be really nice!
the course is fun.
I would like it more if there weren't so many tree's!
Good course
Overall a good, solid course. Not too fancy but maintained fairly well and a friendly staff. Good value for the money.
The layout is good but needs attention
The greens are very rough and the fairways are hard and have many bare spots.
$22 fee. $22 course
Warning: the general manager is still trying to force singles into the same cart to save money. When you book on Golfnow it DOES NOT say "shared" cart. The course is mediocre with brown and dirt everywhere. Looks like they got the bee hive out of the old train near the 15th and 16th hole. A slow day with the usual hackers shooting in the 100's in front of you. Just played Aviara in Carlsbad for $160 so the differences are dramatic but for a $22 practice round I'll come back over and over.
Good golf for the money!!
Its not torrey pines but its a good golf course with some challenging holes and bunker placements. Wide enough fairways that even with my slice lost only a couple of balls. greens could use some more work, some are a little beaten up but otherwise a good course
dry fairways and bumpy greens
Back and forth tree lined fairways greens differernt
Best deal in SoCal golf
This is the best deal in golf. At least, for this time of year.
San Luis Rey Downs Conditions
The course isn't in the greatest shape. Lies in the fairway can be real iffy. They need work.
The greens don't look great but they roll very true and can be tricky to read.
The course itself is fairly benign unless you get off the fairway. Almost every fairway has tree trouble both left and right of the fairway. Get in the trees and you are usually in jail and cannot advance the ball very far. Work on your short game, you will need it to save par more than once.
Overall, I'd say it is a solid course with great people that just needs a little attention and it will test your accuracy from the tee and the fairway.
Greens not great, fast play, good value for the money.
Well, they don't spend too much money on water. Fairways are only watered near greens and near tee boxes. Otherwise, it's pretty much dry hard pack. This course has TONS of trees. Seems like a lot of maple trees which means tons of dry leaves all over every fairway. It's a flat course with tons of trees, so it's a difficult course in that respect. No starter, which I liked. We hit a bucket (no mats - off grass) and casually just fit ourselves in off the first tee as we liked which was great. Fast play, no one was there on a Monday from my perspective. Guy in front of us lived on course and complained about how crowded it was :) . Long par 3 holes (200 +) were fun. Plenty of bunkers which actually had fluffy sand and I can't say that for more expensive courses. Overall, for 28 bucks, great full size course that you can play quickly. Greens are bumpy with a mix of grass patches. But, if greens were in great shape, they would stick out like a sore thumb on this course. As such, they were just what I expected. Doable, but not great. I'll be adding this course to my cheap, fun, quick full size course where I don't really bother to keep score. I had fun and that works.
greens and people
I wasn't very impressed with the greens. They were patchy and bumpy and the practice putting greens did not reflect the greens on the course in the least. We were paired with two people we don't know which is normal but we were all a different level so we played 3 different tees the whole time which made it slow. Then a rude person behind us told our group we needed to play faster (even though we were waiting for group in front almost every tee) and the people we didn't know pointed at us like we were the problem (even though it was his wife and the red tee delays). This lack of respect from the other people and our partners wrecked my entire game and I felt rushed at every stroke. Worst game I've ever played. I was pleased with conditions of fairway and the course was a good challenge. Nice sand traps.
very playable course
I hadn't played here in several years and got a great deal on golf.now. Many of the greens need some work...... bumpy with dead areas and blotches of unwanted grasses. That said, it is pretty open and I only lost 1 ball due to the leaves. The course is flat and not very long...... the par 3s from the back tees are challenging. i'll play again but only if it is a bargain.
Terrible greens
Course is fun, a good value and the scenery is nice. Be prepared for some of the worst greens though.
This course needs some work-too many areas on many holes tagged ground under repair
pictures shown in the web site show the better areas of the course. many areas were marked as "ground under repair" on many of the holes. fairways on the back 9 were very dry with little green and /or hard pan, not easy to hit off of. alot of holes had leaves in and around the the fairways that made it diffcult to find your ball, in many cases our balls were under leaves which took up to 10 minutes to find if at all. overall the course was in fair shape but it could be better
great coarse, great deal, great staff, one of the best deals in north county
i consider this my home coarse, i love it because of the great staff, always accommodating, very friendly, and always a great deal, especially twilight, i love to play later in the day so it works well for me. no its not pebble by any means, but for the price, you get great golf and always treated well....
Good course, needs some work
Overall SLRD is a pretty good value for the money. Played on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon. Course is fairly wide open, both in number of players and layout. Greens are in good shape, but fairways need some work. I am always disappointed in a course that has so much potential, but just doesn't invest in the little details that really make a course great (e.g., tee boxes, edging on bunkers, tee markers, conditioning of fairways, etc.). There was no cart girl on the course for a weekend and also, yardage markers were not present (not even distances on sprinkler heads). Carts have no GPS either, so better have your range finder. Nonetheless, a good value and something different, I'd play again.
