Terrible. Don't play here.
I don't know how people can pay 70 or 80 for this course, let alone the 50 I paid. The course is in terrible condition. Greens have marks all of them. Bunkers were full of leaves, had hard sand and have clearly not been maintained in weeks. If you're forcing people to pay 50-80 bucks a round, could you get someone to take the leaves out of bunkers? Many bunkers had weeds and other plants growing in them. Shameful conditions. The management should be embarrassed.
The layout too, is awful. Your drive can only land in narrow fairways. If you don't hit these narrow fairways or the green, your down a cliff or canyon. The design of most holes is questionable, leaving little to no options other than hit a drive or fairway iron to an exact spot. There is no forgiveness out there, little to no rough on most holes, just canyons. Good golfers will definitely lose some balls out here.
The actual design of the course is extremely questionable. The narrowness of the par 5 combined with three par 3s in the 100 yard range. Also, you'll be driving your cart hundreds of yards between holes. Very strange, convoluted design in all respects.
Pace of play was terrible. No marshals. 5,5 hours. With SHOCKINGLY poor conditions and questions at best design, this was probably my worst golf experience in San Jose in the past 3 years. This course should be charging 20 dollars, max, per round,
Not worth $1
It has been a year since I played The Ranch and while I had heard it was in bad shape, it was the only course left with morning times so I went for it. What a mistake!
2 Years ago, $45 was too much. Paid $80 today when $1 would have been too much. The original layout is tough....beyond tough and the fact that there is no range makes it even more tough. That is the expectation, but the unexpected was every single trap on the course is not managed...EVER....Overgrown waste areas is what they should be played as. That however was not the worst part. The fairways and tee boxes have been ravaged by wild boar and have left a mark on almost every hole. I was told that the course is waiting for a permit to kill or tranquilize the boar, but meanwhile it has ruined the coarse. It will be $Millions to repair and years before the course will be back to the original condition if it ever gets there.
The only positive is the staff. Very nice and courteous. If only the course lived up to 10% of the staff, I might return. At this point, it is 0% and not worth the lost balls that come with the table top conditions.....
Skip it!
The Course has changed
Maybe it's because of the drought. Not sure. Sand traps were full of weeds. Wild pigs have tore up the course.
Challenging but...
The course is challenging, fairways and greens are descent but the bunkers need sand and there are some areas around some greens that are ripped up by wild pigs
The Ranch
Fairways were in very good condition, greens were in good condition, the traps were very bad, hard sand and weeds. looked like they had never been raked and the tee boxes were mostly missing grass and hard to place a tee. The wild pigs have taken their tole on some fairways
Is The Ranch Golf course going native?
I've played here a couple of times, and I've always been impressed with the course. One time they had 5 holes closed, which they said was due to excess water, but this was in the midst of the california drought. In any case, we just doubled back and played the first 5 again. As for yesterday, WOW, what on EARTH is going on with the bunkers? It's as if The Ranch is setting an intention for morphing into a Links course. The bunkers are AWFUL. 4-foot high weeds, creeping crawling weeds, grass overgrowing the edges like a bad moustache. And the fact that there are still rakes there for us to groom our footprints out is laughable. Everything else about the course is pretty well maintained. Nothing was posted, and no one mentioned that they'd be in such bad shape.
Challenge your game!
Course is in great shape except bunkers. Fun to play & test your limits. Amazing views.
Needs some work
Nice Layout, but sand traps not maintained, lots of dead turf.. water jugs on course empty.
A roller coaster ride
The Ranch could be a world class course except conditions limit its potential. It is extremely challenging for 90% of golfers due to extreme carries, blind shots, and unlevel lies on most shots. The topography is spectacular over looking San Jose valley. I believe the cart paths may be one of the longest in the USA so make sure you have a full charge on your cart. A GPS or laser is a definite need here. Unfornately, last years drought has impacted the course with sparse bunkers and fairways. With all the slope in fairways and winds in the canyon also make it difficult to maintain. I was awed by the design and creativeness of the course. You could almost make one of those extreme golf calendars from many of the holes. I will definitely return and encourage golfers who enjoy a challenge and unique design to play this course.
Great course!
Overall Great course, very well kept and had perfect weather. Had an early 7:40 tee time for a discount and it was a little cold but warmed up quickly. Only gripe I had about this course was that the bunkers are junk almost no sand, mostly dirt. Other than that it was great, never had anyone in front or behind us which was really nice. The carts are awesome, no need to set the parking brake and they have ball and club washers on them (first time i had seen this).
The course was difficult. If you don't hit straight you will probably go through 15 balls here. Lots of valleys you need to go over. Only water hazard was the last hole which shouldn't be a problem if you stay left. Well kept greens played really slow in the morning because they were wet but once dried up they were pretty quick.
Poor sand traps
The course is in good condition considering drought conditions for the last few years.
The one obvious drawback to this course is the fact there is no sand in any of the bunkers. Just hard dirt.
Sand in the traps would enhance not only the play of the course, but also the beauty of the course.
I'll wait a year or two before returning.
Very Challenging
Great course to improve all aspects of your game. Greens great shape true and firm. Very challenging landscape but very score rewarding buy playing right club at right time as per course design.
Fun course gone bad
I wouldn't play it anyone - it used to be a really tough course but in great condition. Now it's a really tough course in horrible shape and appears to be getting worse.
Tough
Course was in good shape, except for the bunkers.
A some sand mostly hard with rocks,
Not maintained. Otherwise it was fun,
Going downhill fast!
I don't know what happened to The Ranch? I played a few months ago, and the course was in pretty good condition, minus the bunkers. I decided to play it today, and couldn't believe how bad things have gotten. The fairways were patchy at best. They were mostly destroyed. Apparently players don't know how to fix their pitch marks, because the greens were full of them, to the point were I was fixing 5-6 pitch marks every hole. Most of the time, having to fix them just so I can putt. Totally unacceptable! It's our responsibility, as players, to help maintain the quality of a course. There is no excuse to not fix your pitch marks and divots!
Overall, pretty rough conditions. I will not be playing there again anytime soon.
Once Mighty Giant Has Seen Better Days
Crazy difficult course with a 150 slope! Yes, a 150 slope!!! Longest course I've ever played too. 6750 from the blues. From the small clubhouse the course looks incredible. Unfortunate when you play it is noticeably beat up. The greens are okay but slower than they look even downhill. The bunkers have been given up on. They are now waste areas with rakes! No sand and lots of wild grass and weeds throughout. It was 90 degrees on Sunday and NO CART GIRL ON THE WHOLE COURSE. Still worth a play but not for much longer. WHAT A SHAME! Very sad to see this happen. Obviously this course is getting ready to close, :(
In HORRIBLE shape
This course is in terrible shape and they're still charging rates that would make you think they're still a top-notch facility. Bunkers don't have sand in them and aren't kept up, grass is burnt, spotty and patchy, greens are in horrible shape. Wild boars have taken over, ruined some of the greens -- piles of their stuff everywhere. On a 95-degree day at a course that doesn't come back to the clubhouse after 9, they couldn't even bother to have a drink cart running. We got a "hot deal" for this place -- $50 -- wasn't worth half of that. The course isn't even worth playing anymore. Rip off.
