Poor conditions, but worth it at discount
If you pay full price, you'll be disappointed here due to the poor course conditions. But if you get a cheap tee time and keep your expectations in check, it's worth it. The beer is cheap, and even on the Saturday after Christmas, the course wasn't crowded.
More details below:
As others have noted, just about all grass on the course was dead except around the greens. That said, I didn't have too many shots hitting off of dirt.
The course is relatively short and wide open. There are houses lining the course, but you really have to slice it badly to hit them. Because of the poor condition of the grass, there's not much difference between the fairways and the rough.
On the other hand, the greens were very challenging. They were much faster than at your average muni course, and most were elevated, making for some difficult chips and pitches. Everyone in my group of mid to high handicappers had at least one experience of a putt or chip rolling all the way off the green.
There's a putting green and chipping area. No real driving range, but there's an area where you can hit balls off mats into a net. It's free if you're willing to walk to the back of the net and pick up some balls.
I had a weird experience with the starter/marshall/pro shop employee. Our group had a 12:30 tee time, and we went to the tee no more than five minutes early. We were getting loosened up near the tee, when we saw the guy tooling over to us in his cart. In an unnecessarily belligerent tone, he told us that we should tee off at 12:30, not earlier than that. I looked at my cell phone, and it was exactly 12:27. Not exaggerating at all. We were there three minutes early, and we weren't even standing at the tee. Just a bizarre experience, and I'd advise you to be precisely on time and mind your Ps and Qs while in sight of him.
Staff was rude and unfriendly
Will never play here again. The staff guy there ,was the most bitter unfriendly person running a golf course. He is as dry and depressing as the course it self.
DON'T PLAY HERE!! RUDE!!!
Reserved my $5 hot deal. I was running late and called to inform the clubhouse and was rudely lectured on the contract I had agreed to through golf now. When I arrived I was rudely lectured again by the same employee(Jason Cain) about being on time. This whole lecture made me even later for my tee time. Thankfully he had to leave and the other employee happily let me play finally. Even though the course was cheap enough, I will never play here or recommend this course as a result of the rudeness I encountered. Don't play here!
This course is a atrocious.
Save your money...even if it's free. Arrived after a 30 minute drive from Concord, eager to relieve myself in the pro shop bathroom (which by the way needs to be stocked with paper towels). With damp hands I walked up to the "gentleman" at the counter at 12:33 for a 12:30 8$ nine-hole hot deal. The stately, and obviously experienced course employee immediately began to lecture me about how he "hates when people show up late to tee times because it causes him booking problems". I apologized with a smile and suggested I should have notified them I was running late.
My brother and I were paired with a nice couple who also capitalized on the deal. Four holes into the nine hole round, they separate from us (they're riding a cart). We arrive at the 9th hole without having seen anyone else or holding up the pace of play. Not to mention having navigated the surplus geese droppings and brown patchy stuff while flirting with par.
Upon walking up to our drives in the fairway, the older "gentleman" from earlier comes drives up to me and begins by apologizing for his behavior at check-in. Then he holds up a printout of our reservation on which he had circled the part of the policy that explicitly said we had to abide by his mandate. So we were kicked off, or more elaborately, "escorted" off the course--which really meant being followed eerily close by this over-the-hill lunatic in a cart while being verbally chastised for not following rules and staying with the original grouping.
"You are the only people that I have ever had to do this to..." was suspiciously recited as we loaded our bags and drove away. And upon looking up course reviews discovered this had a history of happening to patrons.
If you're a golfer and have been to your share of courses, you'll find Springtown Golf Course to be the baseline upon which a whole spectrum of more worthwhile courses will saturate your memories. Or maybe you wont come here when you're in Livermore and will be smart to visit Wente Vineyards or Dublin Ranch or Poppy Ridge...even if only to chip and putt at a fabulous practice facility. PLEASE, just save your TIME if anything and consider SPRINGTOWN a "last" resort for that golf itch.
Good place to work on the game
The course is rather old and could use some more maintenance. The fairways are in desperate need of water (but the harder surface gives you some added roll on well-struct tee shots). The greens are in general nicely maintained. But, the non-flatness present me with my biggest challenge. A putt struck too hard will typically roll beyond the hole and to the fringe on the opposite side. A putt struct too weakly could very bell roll right back to you.
Though I'd like to see more maintenance on the fairway, I do find it a fun place to play. I must say I am biased towards it due to its close proximity to my home and the number of "deals" available both through it's monthly pass and through GolfNow hot deals.
It's also easy to find - just off 580 near the Downtown Livermore exit.
I recommend it to anyone who is itching to get in a quick nine holes and is not too picky about pristine conditions.
Challenging long 9 hole course
The staff at Springtown golf course has done an excellent job in making this course in good shape. The tees and greens are in excellent shape and the fairways are very well maintained.
This course is challenging to even the best of players. Though it is only 9 holes, it plays long. It is an excellent course for both beginners and those who are more experienced.
great place to get nine in
The staff is great all but one person that guy is a jerk in a half.. if i knew his name i would blast it all over this review . When u have had a break from golf and want to get it back this is the place. But one thing for sure at springtown u always clean and place.
worst course in the area
Never been so disrespected, my playing partners
Were yelled at for no reason. Quit my membership
After 2 weeks. Head pro never shows up
They don't care for any customer, just money.
Do not give this course your money they don't
Deserve it. Tracy cc, Dublin ranch offers same price
Better customer service and way better course.
Never again will I set foot at that monstrosity of a course.
Needs a lot of work
Course is flat and open with minimal hazards. Playing surface is under-maintained and very hard.
The price and layout are good.
The layout of this course is nice and can be challenging from the blue tees. The greens are tough and always seem to be surrounding by bunkers. Overall the course is in very poor condition. The fairways are in terrible shape and the tee boxes are not any better. The bunkers remind me of water down sand pits at a playground. I paid $9 for my round, which is a great price, but I would not go out of my way to play this course again.
Good Practice Course
Affectionately, this is a bit of a beater-course. I work in the area twice a week and stop by here to get some inexpensive course time in. The greens are reasonable well kept but it gets dry in the fairways. Its a great place to get some practice in, for about 10 bucks. Bunkers need work...meanders through a residential area, but its laid out well enough so houses are a non-factor (unless you really slice/hook one). Staff is great, very friendly.
Coarse is very dry. Fairways are terrible..
Overall this place is close to my home. I play here with my son so he has a good time, this course needs serious attention to the fairways. The greens are in ok shape but deffinatly not worth more than $10 to play 9 holes.
Not in the best shape, but a great deal for the price you pay.
Pretty basic golf course that has some pretty nice holes. Very cheap so no problem with such a great deal.
Good for beginners and practice.
As a person just getting back into golf after a decade hiatus. It was a good course to develop my game. I also can't spend 5-6 hours golfing. So playing 9 holes works well for my available time.
I do like that there are par 5's and 4's. So I get to practice gripping and ripping it. The fairways aren't too well taken care off. But the greens and ok. The sand isn't fine grit so it plays differently than other bunkers at most courses.
I'm located close to the course. So I don't have to spend money on gas and waste time traveling.
At nine bucks per round at Golfnow this is a real value
Two par5 holes remind you that this place has some real distance
Need Water
The course need to be watered, very dry and dying. I like the course for driving far because of the bounce after golf ball landing. Great value, fast carts.
Very friendly, great value and some what challenging.
This course is very friendly, great value and some what challenging. No pressure from other golfer and perfect for beginners like me, quiet environment keeps you calm and motivateds you to concentrate on your own goal.
Okay for a cheap, fast nine holes
Old Springtown has seen better days. Very dry conditions; hard to tell where the fairway ends, and the dry rough area starts. it can be a bit frustrating to hit a good drive, slightly off the center of the fairway and then have a very hard time finding it in the brown 'grass'. positives are that the greens are in good shape, and the people working the pro shop are good guys. if you get a rate of $9-$11, its not a bad way to spend 90 minutes (if you fork out $10 for a cart); at $17 for nine-holes, i'd rather drive to Antioch/Brentwood and play a discounted rate at a good course for $25-$35 during the week. shame they can't take better care of it.
good
Although this golf course is only 9 hole but the course is longer comparable to other 9 hole golf course.well maintain green is better that other course I played.
Poor interaction with coustomers
The person in pro shop was rude, he encourage me not to use golf now and i would save the fees and that he would give me the same price. He said the Golf now wants us to print the confrimation and bring it to him??? he did not want to look it up my confrimation or check my confrimation on my smart phone.
