Announces 2000
Championships Schedule
Far Hills, N.J. - Six of the United States Golf Association's 13 national championships will be conducted on the West Coast in 2000, highlighted by the 100th U.S. Open returning to familiar Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links from June 15-18.
The Open, making its fourth stop at Pebble Beach, will begin the USGA season, which concludes October 3-8 with the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur at Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, Calif.
Joining the Open in a centennial celebration are the 100th U.S. Amateur at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., from August 21-27, and the 100th U.S. Women's Amateur at Waverley Golf Club in Portland, Ore., from August 7-12. Baltusrol is hosting its 15th USGA championship and Waverley its sixth.
The USGA conducts 13 national championships annually, 10 of them strictly for amateurs.
The U.S. Open was held at Pebble Beach previously in 1972, 1982 and 1992. In addition to the three previous Opens, four U.S. Amateurs (1929, 1947, 1961 and 1999) and two U.S. Women's Amateurs (1940 and 1948) were staged at the historic seaside links design.
Including the Women's Amateur, an unprecedented four USGA championships will be held in Portland, Ore., in 2000, beginning with the 75th U.S. Amateur Public Links at Heron Lakes Golf Club. In addition, the U.S. Junior and U.S. Girls' Junior will be held simultaneously from July 31-August 5 at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore., only the second time both events will have been played at the same site - the only other time was in 1978 at Wilmington (Del.) Country Club. Pumpkin Ridge has previously hosted the 1996 U.S. Amateur and the 1997 U.S. Women's Open.
The U.S. Senior Open returns to Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa., from June 29-July 2. Saucon Valley has hosted four previous USGA championships, including the 1992 Senior Open.
The Merit Club in Libertyville, Ill., will host its first USGA championship, the U.S. Women's Open, from July 20-23.
The USGA will also select a team to represent the United States in the Curtis Cup Match, which will be contested June 24-25 at Ganton Golf Club in North Yorkshire, England.
Also on the international schedule is the World Amateur Team Championships at Sporting Club Berlin in Bad Saarow, Germany. The women's competition, in which the United States is the defending champion, is set for August 23-26 and the men's competition is August 31-September 3.
Individually, 10 of the 13 champions crowned in 1999 are eligible to defend their titles. Two of last year's champions earned at least their second USGA title -- Payne Stewart (2nd Open) and Carole Semple Thompson (1st USGA Senior Women's Amateur and 4th overall).
Semple Thompson is the only competitor to win the U.S. Women's Amateur, the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur and the USGA Women's Senior Amateur.
Beginning in the 2000 season, all competitors in the USGA amateur championships will be required to wear non-metal spiked shoes during all rounds.
A complete list of the 2000 championships follows. For more information, or an entry application, call the USGA at (908) 234-2300 or visit www.usga.org.
