U.S. WOMEN'S
MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
ATLANTA, Ga. - Alissa Herron, 26, Minneapolis, Minn., won the 1999 United States Women's Mid-Amateur Championship by defeating Leland Beckel, 33, Bethesda, Md., 1 up, at the 6,129-yard, par 72 Cherokee Town & Country Club.
Neither player led by more than one hole in the match, but Beckel missed short putts on the 16th and 17th to lose a narrow lead and the national championship.
The match was all square coming into the 17th hole, but Herron parred while Beckel suffered a double-bogey six and Herron was 1 up going into the 18th. Both players hit the green of the par-5 finishing hole and two-putted for pars to end the match.
Herron's brother, Tim Herron, a player on the PGA Tour, was her caddie throughout the championship.
