ED BROOKS TAKES
MEDALIST HONORS AT U.S. MID-AMATEUR
St. Louis, Mo. - Ed Brooks, 50, of Georgetown, Texas, shot a 2-under-par 69 at Bellerive Country Club Sunday for a 36-total total of 3-under 139 to earn medalist honors by one stroke over Duke Delcher, 44, of Bluffton, S.C., at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
Brooks, winner of the 1997 Texas Amateur, was one of two golfers on the day to break par of 71 over Bellerive or Old Warson Country Clubs, the courses used for stroke play.
"It's an honor to be medalist, but tomorrow it won't mean a lot," said Brooks, who has been putting cross-handed for the last four months and has won four top-level state amateur tournaments since.
"I feel so good about how I'm playing," said Brooks, who 3-putted only once Sunday. "I've been putting really well the past two days and putting is where I was struggling. I just hope my putter and I can hang in there a little while longer."
Play continues Monday in this age 25-and-older championship with the first round of match play at Old Warson. Matches continue through Thursday's 18-hole final.
Delcher, a member of the victorious 1997 U.S. Walker Cup team, also shot 1-under 69 for a 140 total. Bert Atkinson of Charleston, S.C., the medalist in 1997, was next at 143.
Sean Knapp, 37, of Oakmont, Pa., who had led with a 5-under 66 on Saturday, was one of five golfers at 2-over 144. The others were 1995 Mid-Amatteur champion Jerry Courville of Wilford, Conn., Tommy Brennen of Covington, La.,
Randy Haag of San Francisco, Calif., and Jim Skinner of Los Angeles, Calif. The cut for the low 64 scorers who advanced to match play came at 9-over 151, with a 22-man playoff to decide the final 12 places scheduled for Monday morning.
Defending champion John "Spider" Miller, 49, of Bloomington, Ind., safely advanced at 148. John Harris of Minneapolis, Minn., the 1993 U.S. Amateur champion, was in at 146. Trip Kuehne of Dallas, Texas, the 1994 U.S. Amateur runner-up, was one stroke higher at 147.
Ken Bakst, the 1998 Mid-Amateur champion, advanced with a 149. Steve Sheehan of Reno, Nev., one of last year's quarterfinalists and the older brother of LPGA player Patty Sheehan, narrowly advanced with a 150.
The U.S. Mid-Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
St. Louis, Mo. - Results of second day of stroke play at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, played Sunday at the par 35-36-71, 7,047-yard Old Warson Country Club and the par 35-36-71, 7,047-yard Bellerive Country Club (*-- denotes 22-man playoff Monday for the final 12 spots for match play):
