WOMEN'S STATE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
USGA State Team Championship
September 7-9, 1999
at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club (Gold Course)
Williamsburg, Va.
Williamsburg, Va.-The Florida team composed of Taffy Brower, 54, of Boynton Beach, Marla Jemsek Weeks, 30, of Oviedo, and Robin Weiss, 45, of Palm Beach, were victorious in the 1999 USGA Women's State Team Championship with a 36 hole score of 286. The championship, which was played at the 6,073-yard, par 72 Golden Horseshoe Golf Club Green Course, was shortened to 36 holes due to severe weather.
Tennessee's 36 hole score of 287 put them in second place, eight strokes ahead of Pennsylvania, which had a score of 295 to finish third.
Weeks, who represented Florida in three consecutive championships, played with Brower on the 1997 team. Florida placed third in the 1995 and 1997 State Team championships.
" We've definitely had a strong team this year," said Weeks 1996 Curtis Cup Team member. "
" Team play is the best. I love team competition," says Weiss, the 1990 Curtis Cup Team member. " Playing as an individual is nice but playing in team competition, there is just something about the camaraderie there. You don't want to let the team or your state down."
"The weather was unfortunate but we came here today with the thought that Tennessee would play very strong. We knew we would have to play our hearts out. We will never know what could have happened. We got to hold the Judy Bell trophy and that's the main thing. To have our name on a trophy named after Judy Bell, who has done so much for golf. I think that's very, very special," said Weiss 1989 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur champion.
Second place team Tennessee, represented by Shelly Anderson, 26, and a pair of 23-year-olds, Erin Kurczewski and Katie Gallina, made an attempt to finish higher this year than they have in previous years. Tennessee placed 38th in the 1997 championship and 27th in the 1995 championship.
"We played today's round just like it was another round. When I heard the thunder, I hoped it would just go away," said Gallina, of Memphis.
"I knew it was bad when they moved us from one shelter to another," says Kurczewski of Nashville, who shot 2-under par 70 in the first round. "Usually we just wait it out outside but they were transporting us in. "
" You can't think back. That will only make you feel bad," said Anderson, 26, of Clarksville.
Pennsylvania, which won the championship in 1995, was composed of Carol Semple Thompson, 50,of Sewickley, Lisa McGill, 40, of Philadelphia, and Liz Haines, 51, of Gladwyne.
The State Team Championship is a biennial event that began in 1995 as part of celebration of the USGA Centennial and was fashioned after the World Amateur Championship.
Forty-three states are entered in the championship. Alaska, Kansas, North Dakota, New Mexico, Maine, Vermont and Wyoming are not represented.
