FAR HILLS, N.J. - Allegheny Country Club in Sewickley, Pa., has been chosen as the site of the 2001 USGA Senior Women's Amateur, the United States Golf Association has announced. The Championship will be held Sept. 10-15.
One of the oldest clubs in the nation, Allegheny Country Club was designed by Tom Bendelow in 1895. Noted architect Donald Ross was responsible for revisions made in 1915, 1922 and 1946.
Allegheny CC will be hosting its third USGA Championship, having been the site for the 1954 U.S. Women's Amateur and the 1990 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur, which was won by current USGA Executive Committee member and club member Carol Semple Thompson.
Semple Thompson also won the U.S. Women's Amateur in 1973 and the Women's Mid-Amateur in 1997 as well as 14 Pennsylvania Women's Amateur titles. She also represented the U.S. on a record-setting 10 Curtis Cup squads. Her father, Harton S. Semple, was USGA President in 1974-75.
Judy Oliver, a three-time Curtis Cup squad member and captain of the 1992 team and Phyllis Semple call the club home. Roy Vucinich, the head professional, is a veteran of the winner's circle in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with a state PGA crown (1987), a State Open title (1984) and four Western Pennsylvania Open championships to his credit. The 1906 U.S. Amateur champion, Eben M. Byers, was a also a club member.
Prior to 2001, the USGA Senior Women's Amateur is scheduled from Sept. 14-19, 1999 at Desert Mountain Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., and from Sept. 18-23, 2000 at Sea Island Golf Club on St. Simon's Island, Ga.
