Wally Goodwin builds a
lasting empire in his final year
PALO ALTO, Calif. (Nov. 18, 1999) - Stanford men's golf signed two up-and-coming athletes to National Letters of Intent, Brian Sinay and Blake Mastalir, to join the team for the 2000-2001 season.
Brian Sinay, from Irvine, Calif., has been named the Orange County Register player of the year and First Team All-Orange County by both the Orange County Register and the Los Angeles Times all three years of his high school career from 1997-99.

Blake Mastalir, an Englewood, Colorado native, attends Cherry Creek High School. Mastalir was tabbed an AJGA Compaq Scholastic All-American, and was named Colorado High School All-State. He competed in the AJGA Compaq Junior Championship at Trophy Lake GC, where he finished in 5th place. He also took 12th at the AJGA Aspen Junior Classic.
Head coach Wally Goodwin said, "These two young players are both outstanding, each in their own way. I expect that sometime shortly after their arrival, they will both make significant contributions to Stanford men's golf."
The two signees mark the end of Stanford golf coach Wally Goodwin's legacy. Goodwin, who has coached at Stanford for 13 years, and has produced PGA greats such as Tiger Woods and Notah Begay III, will retire at the end of the 1999-2000 season.
