NCGA San Joaquin Valley Championship
July 19-20 -- Stevinson Ranch GC
STEVINSON Randy Haag of the Olympic Club fired a stellar final-round 68 at Stevinson Ranch GC to win the 23rd NCGA San Joaquin Valley Championship for the second time in his storied amateur career.
Haag made five birdies on the day, three on the pivotal back nine, to match the lowest round of the tournament. The other 68 came from Dong Yi of Alameda GC in Monday's first round, the third straight year Yi had taken the halfway-point lead in the event. However, for the second year in a row, Yi struggled in the final round, carding a 75 to tie for sixth.
Haag got off to a hot start Tuesday with a birdie on the par-5 opening hole. His only bogey of the day came on the next hole when he drove into a fairway bunker, but he was able to fight it off with seven straight pars and birdies on the ninth and tenth.
Haag, who uses a side-saddle, croquet-like putting style, rolled in another birdie on the par-3 12th, finding the hole from 25 feet away. He would make another bomb on the 17th, as he intended to lag the 50-footer but somehow got it to roll in for birdie.
"This feels great because it's really a great field," said the 40-year-old Haag, who also won the San Joaquin Valley in 1995. "This course is a lot of fun to play and it really set up well for my game."
Meanwhile, 17-year-old Tom Johnson of North Ridge CC continued the pace that has made him one of the hottest players in Northern California this summer. Johnson shot his second straight 2-under-par 70 to finish at 140 and alone in second place. He won the NCGA Junior Championship three weeks ago a few days after advancing to the round of 16 in State Amateur.
Johnson opened with a mediocre 38 on the front nine, but scorched the back side with a 32. He converted three straight birdies on the 11th, 12th and 13th and added another on the par-5 18th. That final birdie was just enough to edge third-place Danny Paniccia of Fig Garden GC, who followed his opening 69 with a 72.
"I watched my brother (Will) play in this last year," Johnson said, "and it's cool because there were so many good players and the very next year I can actually contend with them. It's a booster for my confidence that I was able to play well against good players."
