Dudley-Pipkin Duo Wins With
Senior Four-Ball with Closing Birdie

Senior Four-Ball Championship
Poppy Hills GC
Sept. 23-24, 1999

Pebble Beach (9-24-99) – Joe Dudley two-putted for birdie from 40 feet on the final hole Friday to give him and partner Bob Pipkin a come-from-behind victory in the first Northern California Golf Association Senior Four-Ball Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Course.

Dudley’s birdie enabled the Almaden Country Club twosome to finish at 65-68—133. The win came at the expense of Jim McMurtrey (Diablo CC) and Bill Celli (Round Hill CC) who went to the final hole with a one-stroke lead but had to scramble for a closing bogey. McMurtrey and Celli shot 65-69—134.

After nine holes in the final round, McMurtrey and Celli held a two-stroke lead with a 3-under-par effort. They also birdied the 10th and 11th holes and were three strokes up going to the 12th. Dudley and Pipkin, who also birdied the 10th, got one stroke back with a birdie at No. 12 and another when McMurtrey and Celli bogeyed the 13th.

The lead went back to two when the eventual champions bogeyed No. 14, but Pipkin got his team to within a shot with a 50-foot birdie putt on the tough par-4 16th. Both teams parred the 17th to set the stage for the closing hole and Dudley’s victorious stroke.

Third place went to fast-closing Cliff Davis (Green Valley CC) and Bob Olds (Brentwood CC). They combined for a 6-under-par 66 on the final day and a 36-hole total of 136.

Antioch’s Bob Heaton holed an 8-iron on the sixth hole for an ace, but he and partner Bill Paulson finished at 74-71—145.
