Konsdorf’s Birdie Wins
Playoff at 20th Sacramento
Valley Amateur Championship

CHICO – Robert Konsdorf, a newcomer to Northern California Golf Association tournament circles, rolled in a 15-foot birdie putt on the third extra hole Tuesday to win the 20th Sacramento Valley Amateur Championship at Butte Creek Country Club.

The victim of Konsdorf’s effort was first-round leader John Ellis from San Jose Country Club. Ellis narrowly missed birdies on the first two playoff holes and those proved costly.

Konsdorf, who received a big break on the first playoff hole, battled into a tie after the regulation 36 holes with a 2-under-par 70 and his 139 total. Ellis opened the tournament with a brilliant 65 Monday, but struggled Tuesday with a 2-over-par 74.

Konsdorf, a member at Castlewood CC, birdied the 11th and 17th holes on the back nine to finish at minus-5. Ellis just missed a 20-footer on the final hole that would have given him the victory.

Konsdorf’s drive on the first extra hole appeared headed for out of bounds after hitting a cart path. However, the ball found the basket on the back of a golf cart. After taking a drop, Konsdorf found the green with his second shot and made a par. He missed an 18-footer for birdie on No. 2 and got another chance when Ellis missed from eight feet.

"I retired a couple years ago," said 46-year-old Kronsdorf. "My wife (Joan) got tired of having me around the house. She got out the NCGA magazine and told me to go play in some of the tournaments."

Ellis picked up 195 points for second place and now has 935 points in Player of the Year standings. Randy Haag leads with 1,035, but shot 74-74—148 in this event and did not add to his total.

Darryl Donovan from Santa Teresa GC birdied the final hole to shoot 69-71—140 and finished third.

The final round was marked by showers and temperatures more than 30 degrees lower than norm.
