Sad writing April 14, 2005, 8:54 am

by Jim
This is another example of the boring writing of Chris Baldwin and Tim McDonald. This story would be more interesting if it was about the history of the golf course. Bobby Jones, Johnny Miller, Tom Watson, and Babe Zaharias instead of describing the holes or conditions. This is the mark of an inexperienced writer, no ... Baldwin has experience, he's just not any good.

The author of this article is lacking. I lived in SF in the sixties and seventies and have played it maybe 1000 times. Par 3's too long and 4's too short. I saw Watson play it his senior year at Stanford. Par is 68 and he shot a lucky 73. Should have been a 78 at least. On course restroom near 6th tee
anf 13 green near clubhouse so facilities are available. There is no ocean anywhere near the 9th hole. Nearest holes to the water are 17 tee and 3 green. 3 green provides the best views. Hardest hole is the 190 yd 12th. Tiger would hit a 2 or a utility wood if he carries one. 190 and a wood for Tiger?? Seems wrong but you will see for yourself if you play it. Hit a 5 iron and you will be 50 yds short. I would forget playing this course. $30 is way too much.$10 tops is fair. Try Harding Park or, better yet, Sharp Park. Harding has been refurbished and is beautiful too but expensive for non residents. $70 or thereabouts. Sharp Park is about the same as Lincoln and roght against the ocean and level lies on most holes. Forget his comments about staying downtown. My advice would be to go nowhere near downtown SF. It is like an insane asylum and very expensive. Stay in the Richmond or Sunset districts. Seal RockInn is nice and near the Cliff House and Sutro Park. The Great Highway Motor Inn is in the Sunset right acroos the Great Highway from the ocean. Less than $100 per at both places. Many many good eating places in the Richmond on Clement Street near the Lincoln Park course. All ethnic foods are availble. Absolutely 0 fast food places. No Mcdonalds Wendys KFC. This is one thing that makes SF so appealing. I would recommend Henry's at 39th and Balboa.
For a Hamburger try Bill's at 20th and Clement. The Marina district along Chestnut street is ok too. Try Osolo Mia for Italian food and very good Pizza. Many good watering holes too with 25-40 crowd. I forgot 1 other golf course. This is a must play and is around $50 to $60. Twilight around $35. The course is The Presidio. A very famous course. About 6200 yds and very narrow with good conditions. Excellent restaurant too. Dimaggio was a member there before it went daily fee. thcourse040 hfmia ogn
