Marshallia Ranch
First time to this course, but not the last. One of the regulars saw the offer on Golfnow, he'd played there as a member of the SBCC golf team. The layout is traditional with elements of courses found further north. Great setting, plenty challenging and at least on a weekday, seriously uncrowded. I thought the greens were in better shape than the course overall but there's really little to fault especially at the cost. Nice facilities, helpful and friendly staff. The food and beverage shuts down early (no food after 2pm), great value for course grub - breakfast sandwiches and burgers were all under $5! Cheap beer too.
If it were closer to home, I'd gladly play Marshallia regularly. The only other knock on the place is that you have to drive past La Purisma to get there!!
Nice challenge but needs more TLC
This is a course with plenty of undulations on the fairways and greens. Most fairways are tree-lines with huge eucalypts and pines and well placed bunkers. There were a couple of long par 3s and 4s. The pace of play was very good and the course was good value with the Golf Now discount. The fairways were a little shaggy and the rough was patchy with many bare, sandy patches. We were not informed the greens had just been aerated and top-dressed which spoiled our experience a little.
Playing at VAFB
On a slightly foggy morning play, this course is excellent for a quiet round of golf. The course is exceptionally quiet, surrounded by wildlife and lots of Eucalyptus trees. The tee boxes are well groomed and the fairways play very well - they are very green despite the sustained drought in California. Greens are fast and hard, your ball rolls a long way - but in excellent condition. No wind today!
beautiful setting
love this course, challenging, always in good shape, greens roll well, it is delightful to play, and with all of the bunkers and up hill holes it is no cake walk.
Challenging greens
Stay below the hole. Greens are extremely fast.
Thoroughly enjoyable round of golf.
Very windy in the afternoon.
What a gem
Loved everything about the course from the staff to the layout! Well worth the drive from L.A.
Nice greens and wildlife
The course is in good condition. The fairways are mostly wide and the rough is short. I got good lies and hit out of the iceplant twice. Overall a nice playable course for a mid teens handicaper. Good practice facility
Out-of-the-way gem
Not easy to find. Not near anything else. Well designed. Very attractive. Maintenance is okay. Price is fair. Carts are in poor condition. A definite challenge. Worth the trouble to get there, especially for Monday bargain.
Fun
Great Course, friendly staff, they put you out closet to the tee timed book, would play again they let you know what events and tournaments are coming up.
Try this one out!!!
This is a challenging but enjoyable course. The staff in the pro shop are very helpful and friendly. The snack bar, though, is not well run. Too bad.
Where the deer and coyotes play
If you don't like to wait for deer to move off the fairways, play somewhere else. Fun yet challenging course with interesting layout. Can play in 3 1/2 hours easily.
Interesting layout, great pace of play, a little ragged condition
This is one of my favorite courses on the central coast. Interesting layout with mature trees and ice plant that you best avoid. I have always enjoyed this course because it rewards your ability to maneuver the ball especially off the tee and the fact that at the end of the round I have used almost every club in my bag.. Unfortunately, the course was watered heavily and the fairways were generally long and soggy. In my experience, this was very unusual. Greens were a little rough and rolling slowly, again unusual. Pace of play - Exceptional: 3 hours and 20 minutes for a threesome. Great value for the money!
great layout
i have been playing this course for over 20 years. it has a great location with lots of eucalyptus trees and ice plant. last time i played was in July of 2013 and it looked somewhat neglected. it is now open to the public which probably means it may close with defense cuts. love the 570 yard 15th hole and the 440 yd 15th usually into the wind..... if you're on in 2 you are a stud!
1963
Played this course as a kid when I lived on, what was at that time temporary base housing, 3 duplex ranch style homes in the center of the course, # 8 out the front door, # 12 out the back door, temporary was 8 years. Back then the course had two water features that have since been eliminated. I returned 40 years later to a still beautiful course, well maintained, from the greens and fairways to the up to date golf carts and pro shop/restaurant. All the staff are concerned with you having a great golfing experience and work to make that goal attainable for you. Week days are the best for play. Weekends as you know are busy. This course is a gem well worth the trip
