They are letting this course die
They finally cut back some of the growth on the cart paths but more is needed. The fairways are brown and the greens hard. The cart paths need maintenance. The carts are dirty and I have two that die before you complete a round.
The oldest course on this side of Mississippi
There is lots of hilly fairways, blind shots, bunkers everywhere, One of the par 3s is a monster, 207 yards, over a body of water, straight up the hill, on blind shot to the top of the green. May have to use a driver just to get up the hill to the green. Lots of great views of the bay, I would play it again, now that I know the layout of the course.
things have been better
Course was fine, however the carts were over run with spiders and the cart attendant wasn't concerned. He said we don't have any water, but did have a short broom he gave us to get them off. Also the course has a big mosquito problem, one of my partners got completely eaten up.
1st Time Here
I found the Golf Course challenging. Staff was friendly and courteous. Would possibly return.
Thank you mlevygm for the four star review! We are happy to hear you had a great time at the course. See you again soon!
Great golf
This is a great course in a spectacular location! Well worth the trip.
Thank you u849946994 for the five star review! We are happy to hear your recent trip at Mare Island extended your expectations. Hope to see you on the greens with us again this season!
What's happened to this course.
Course condition were very dry and no sand in sand traps. Course has been not maintained very well. I used to like playing a few rounds a year here but will not be coming back for a while. Would rather go play at Bluerock Springs for less. Also round was over 5 hours on a Tuesday. Unacceptable.
Need ground work
I've seen this place in better playing conditions in the past. They need to work on filling our parts of the fairway where there are open ground (no grass). I don't think this is part of the design to leave some areas exposed without grass. Greens are good, but some bunkers are almost packed dirt and not sand.
Diamond in the Rough
I have played this course for many years and it has the potential to be an outstanding golf course. 1/2 the course is one of the oldest courses west of the Mississippi. The other 1/2 is fairly new. It took a big hit during the drought and is slowly coming back. The greens are pretty good, the fairways getting better and the tee boxes in dire need of work. The carts are dated and seats need repair and all the mats at the driving range should be replaced. All the sand traps need reworking and some sand. It looks like they let most of the grounds crew go. An investment in this course would provide a viable alternative to courses in the surrounding area.
Thank you grandj48 for the review. We are sorry to hear that the course conditions did not meet your expectations. This is not the standard that we are trying to achieve and will make sure to pass this note along. However, it is great to hear that the course treated you well on your recent visit with us. Thanks for playing the course and we hope to see you again!
Good
For the first time I had teeded up this link-course in the seaside. I feel the air breezed on my face strongly. It's feel so good. I did make a good shot every hole . I am very much satisfied with surrounding atmosphere in the course.
Thank you u000007920995 for the great four star review. We are pleased to hear the course treated you well on your recent visit at Mare Island! Hope you can join us again this season!
History in the wind
Fun golf course. Could use sand in traps. Traps hard as a rock. Greens good and consistent.
Lot of history and received a history lesson from lady starter on first tee. Knew her stuff and was very interesting. Had to listen closely because of howling wind.
Thank you u000005257555 for the four star review and feedback! Hope to see you hit the greens at Mare Island again this season.
Thank you Webberino for the five star rating!
Rough needs to be squared away
I golf here every week. Although fairways and greens have come back, work needs to be done on roughs, which should be a gradation from the smooth fairways. On some holes you're already in four-inch high grass just a yard off the fairway. Even worse is the clover and fescule runners, again just off the fairway. I've been losing balls on the second and 14th holes that hit in the fairway.
Beautiful Views
This course is surrounded by water as the name implies. The front is tough with up and down shots winding up through the hills.
The back 9 is very straight forward.
This is not a long course so very fair for woman, getting on in regulation.
I look forward to playing this course often during my stay in Vallejo.
Thank you for the four star review! We appreciate your time to provide feedback regarding your recent visit with us! Enjoy hitting the greens at Mare Island on your visit!
Thank you gynomik for the four star rating!
Solid golf experience
I've been playing here since it was a 9 hole military course - the the redesign was done well -
I have no complaints about course conditions - The greens were as good as they have ever been- Keep the ball in the fairways - or you will be punished - My twosome was sent right out when we checked in - pace of play was good - 2 groups ahead of us waved us through - we tend to play fast so that was pleasant -
finished in about 4 hours
Thank you melman123 for being part of the Mare Island Golf Club family. We appreciate your feed back and review. Hope to see you hit the green at Mare Island again soon!
Mare Island golf
Considering all the rain that we have had in the Napa/Sonoma areas, Mare Island is extrememly playable. Where the courses are still doing cart path only, it is a real treat to be able to drive on the course. the play was midday and it was very fast finishing the round in a bit under 4 hours.
Thank you uWDCE8681WD for the five star review! We are pleased to hear that you had a great time from your recent visit at Mare Island. Hope to see you again this season!
Poor course conditions
My group had taken Mare Island out of our rotation for a year due to the poor course conditions. We played again recently and, unfortunately, the management has done nothing to improve the conditions of the course. I love the course layout, so it was very sad to see that the owners of this course are not doing much besides watering and mowing.
Specific issues:
No sand in bunkers. They are just dirt. A number of bunkers are full of weeds. Dead spots on some greens. No divot mix was available to fill in divots.
I found out that the course was purchased by some developers in the past few years who want to put a hotel next to the course. It seems like the owners won't put any money into the course until they can build a hotel.
We play a lot of golf around the bay area and Mare Island is definitely in the worst condition of any course I've seen. It's sad because it could be a great course if it was well maintained.
Ehhh
Played here many times. I love the course layout it's always challenging. However the pace of play when I played was not so great. Never saw a marshal and was stuck behind a foursome that probably plays there every week or weekend.. Last the greens where garbage. With all the water California has received this year they weren't in good condition at all.
Hello Mark6471965, we are disappointed to hear your expectations weren't met at the course. Hope you can join us at Mare Island again this season.
Thank you johnredman1 for the four star review. We hope you can tee with off at Mare Island again this season and conquer the course!
