About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2017.
The Champions Club at the Retreat was carefully carved from the canyons that surround the Cleveland National Forest. The golf course closely follows the natural contours and depressions of the landscape, providing a variety of elevation changes with which to contend. The undulating greens usually have multiple tiers and the hills and valleys guarantee a few blind shots and forced carries. Your shots won't need length necessarily, but they will need to be straight. Each hole offers not only a unique design thanks to the diverse terrain but also different, equally stunning views. To make this formidable golf course more playable for a wider range of skill levels, a 2011 renovation took out 16 punishing fairway and greenside bunkers but there are still plenty there to provide a challenge.

Challenging course
Great course with very nice view. Can be challenging for most golfers.
Champions retreat
The course was a good challenge. Multiple force carries so can be tough for high handicapper. Greens were fast and in great shape except for the unrepaired pitch marks from the group ahead.
Way overbooked
Four and a half hours to get through 10 holes called it quits on the 11th. Tee boxes backed up to three groups. Course in nice condition with a fun but challenging layout.
Wow!
What a beautiful landscape and setting for a golf course. It was carved right into the hills and gave spectacular views. The layout was incredible and we didn't see another person on the course all day (granted it was over 100 degrees out). The emplyees were not very professional in the proshop and the same was true of the staff in the clubhouse, it was very strange actually. But overall, this was one of the best golfing experiences I've had and I will surely be going back soon.
Great course
Great Course. First time playing it and had a great time. Very challenging and definitely requires some course knowledge. Will play again.
excellent choice
First time to play... It was wonderful except 108 degree hot weather..
Roller coaster ride
First time playing this course and it was a beast. So much elevation, doglegs, and blind shots so be ready. There are no stock shots here, think outside your normal game and manage every hole. Call me crazy, but I must love tourture. Can't wait to play here again!!
Great course
It's a great course. The hilly terrain make it challenging
love this challenging course
First time playing this course it was an amazing day cloudy when i tee'd off but sun finally decided to show up around 3pm the pace was good, they really do a good job in delegating the pace. This course has a lot of up and down slopes, so that means an accurate tee shot is a MUST. The par 5's are very reachable but need to be dead on straight, long hitters will enjoy this course, but some holes a ggod lay up is necessary. Did not use my driver that much, i decided 2 good fairwoods can do the job. Greens were amazing and well maintained. I will definitely play here again and highly recommend the course, if you are a beginner make sure you be patient, because there are a lot of trenches that you need to clear when tee'ing off.
Amazing course I love it!
Course was cool, Staff was rude.
Played the course for 31$ which was the Aerification price. The greens weren't in that bad of shape. Very playable. Course was in good shape and enjoyed the layout. GPS on the cart didn't work. Kid in the golf shop was rude and also the girl driving the beverage cart was very rude. I would play again at the discounted rate.
Not really a retreat
Course is very hard and fast. With the slope being up and down and strong winds on the day we played it makes it more difficult. Even when you hit a good drive you wind up where everyone does and it's dirt. Try hitting out of the dirt straight up hill into the wind, some what tricky to say the least.
Tough
After four years i decided to play golf again, not a course you'd want to take time off and begin at TCR. lol otherwise great experiance, very hard.
Tough course made worse by Pace of play
I very much enjoy the challenge of this course. Some fairways were patchy but with a drought you can only do so much. The greens were excellent but some fairway bunkers had very large rocks in them which risks damage to your irons. The biggest issue is they have no Marshall so when you wait for 15-20 minutes to tee off , several holes in a row, it becomes very frustrating.
This is a very fair course
I heard so much bad about this tract I was actually afraid to play it.
This is a very good course, pay attention to the starter and if players would just play from the appropriate tees the pace could/would be even quicker.
The greens were outstanding, quick & true. You couldn't ask for anything else.
A unique golf experience
Played the Blacks (6742/73.6/140) as a 4some in slightly over 4 hours using Forelinx, frequently waiting on the 3some in front of us.
Champions Club is certainty a unique golf experience. The course is constantly up/down hills, you will rarely have a flat lie after you leave the tee. Definitely a course most high handicappers would hate. This would be an extremely challenging course to walk, I have never seen a walker the times I have played here. Also challenging to club correctly with the often severe elevation changes and the wind swirling around in the canyons. Most shots require precision on both distance and direction or your ball is gone on this layout. Guessing the correct club to hit and still be safe on several holes changes with every round because of course conditions and the wind.
I have more of a grip it and rip it mentality, and this is target golf to the extreme. However, I DO enjoy? the challenge this course offers in spite of it's quirkiness, even downright unfairness @ times. It has several poorly designed golf holes that are overly punitive even for above average golfers. Almost every hole has forced carry's off the tee and/or to the green over native red staked ravines. Almost every hole has both sides red staked. It's an almost certain penalty stroke if you get off the beaten path.
The over seeded rye tees were good overall, mostly lush. A few could use leveling and especially the par 3 tees were in need of more regular divot repair.
The Bermuda fairways were thin and had tons of unfixed divots, not good to play from. On numerous uphill fairways the ball will roll significantly backwards if you do not get it far enough up the hill to reach a level spot. Downhill, the extra roll can get you in trouble by rolling through the fairway into a hazard. The layout can be very unfair with thin fairways.
The Bermuda rough is thin but has better coverage than the fairway.
The sand traps are plentiful on this layout even after many from the original design were removed. Filled with dark brown sand, decently maintained. However, they have too many rocks in them to be considered good.
The large bent green complexes are firm and medium speed, not as fast as usual here. Well maintained with relatively few unfixed ball marks, no issues holding well struck approach shots. They have alot of slope and many have multiple tiers. You need imagination to putt and chip well on these greens. You usually have many options and can use slopes and/or back stops in addition to more normal pitch/chip shots to try and get the ball close here.
The customer service was exceptional. Mike in the Pro Shop is always excellent to deal with.
Very efficient check-in and the new starter was great as well. Recommended = depends on the individual. You need to be able to tolerate hilly, target golf with severe greens and potentially lots of penalty strokes.
Champions Club @ the Retreat
Played the Blacks (6742/73.6/140) with Lotrgolfer48, Dconnally and RGM2525 in 4H, 20M using Forelinx celebrating Matt's B-Day. The over seeded rye tees were mostly lush and good overall. A few could use leveling and especially the par 3 tees were in need of divot repair. The Bermuda fairways have greened up with the recent rains. However, they were thin and muddy, not good to play from. The amount of unfixed divots in the fairway area is very high on this course, especially on holes that have "collection areas" where many balls end up after taking mounds and slopes to a low or level spot. I usually play the ball as it lies and it's plain no fun trying to hit an iron on an already thin fairway with your ball laying in an unfixed divot. Shots on holes 1,2 & 4 in particular will roll backwards. I had a wedge out of a fairway bunker on #2 for my 2nd shot, then an 8 iron for my 3rd shot after the ball I advanced 50 yards UP the hill ended up 50 yards BEHIND where I started after it rolled back to the bottom of the hill. The Bermuda rough has better coverage than the fairway, thin but more playable. The sand traps were filled with dark brown sand and are plentiful on this layout. Decently maintained but not great to play out of because of the amount of rocks in them. The large bent green complexes have alot of slope on the multi tiered greens. Firm and medium speed, not as fast as usual here. Not that many ball marks and they held approach shots well. You need imagination to putt and chip well on these greens, using slopes and/or back stops to get the ball close, which I like. The customer service was excellent. Very efficient check-in. Mike in the Pro Shop was tremendous in making sure that Matt was taken care of on his B-Day! I don't prefer target golf courses and this is target golf to the extreme... but I like this course in spite of it's quirkiness, even downright unfairness @ times. I somehow enjoy coming here on a fairly regular basis to usually be crystal clear even before the 1st hole is completed that it's a good thing my bag is full of balls. However, this layout can be very unfair with thin fairways. Many holes have forced carry's off the tee, several also have forced carries to the green over native red staked ravines. Almost every hole has both sides red staked. So if you get off the beaten path, it's an almost certain penalty stroke. The course is constantly up/down hills, you will rarely have a flat lie after you leave the tee. This would be an extremely challenging course to walk, I have never seen a walker the times I have played here. Also challenging to club correctly with the often severe elevation changes and the wind swirling around in the canyons. Most shots require precision on both distance and direction or your ball is gone on this layout. Knowing what club to hit and still be safe on a few of the holes changes with each visit because of course conditions and the wind. Recommended = this course is an acquired taste. You will either love it or absolutely hate it, there is no middle ground.
Great value
the only downside was the congested situation in the back nine.
A first at Champions Club
Staff friendliness .. not really to start well as a first time at this course . Hole #1 we were 3 players no one as understood right were was the hole and flag - pace of play fair but not much as long there was 3 caddies behind us - this course is more a mountain race than a real course to play, I was not able to improve my golf . Sincerely it was not a good souvenir and I will forget it . Bad experience. The be fair enough - good thing was the view and the putter greens condition.
Course is hurting
Ive played this course multiple times throughout the years. Lucky enough to have played when it was still private so I have seen it at its best. Unfortunately, now, it is in very poor shape IMO. Much rather play at the courses surrounding this one.
