Southern California has no shortage of scenic oceanfront golf courses, but the Crossings at Carlsbad still manages to stand out. With the Pacific Ocean to the west and the southern California Peninsular Mountain Ranges to the east, the course's scenery is truly stunning. The golf course will take you across rugged terrain, through canyons and wetlands accentuated with sagebrush and native flora. Water or sand comes into play on almost every hole but if you can manage to hit straight and keep it in the fairway, you'll be generously rewarded. The golf course finishes with one of its toughest holes. You begin with an intimidating tee shot into the coastal breeze with bunkers on the left and a canyon on the right, then you face an approach shot to a severely undulating green framed by trees and bunkers. In addition to the course, the Crossings at Carlsbad also has a lighted practice center.

The big plusses for the Crossings: beautiful SoCal beach weather, great views, a challenging course, especially if you like hills, and nice dining facilities. Negatives are the noise from nearby airport, and some spots that are just too hilly if you've got bad knees or you don't have cleats. A plus for women golfers: two tees average women golfers can hit from instead of just one, though there are unfortunately multiple fairways with forced carries. Less expensive than Aviara or LaCosta.
